I can't understand the whole concept of lumpers fees. I am a newer driver for Werner, and sometimes I have to write out a check for a lumpers fee, that of course the company pays for. What I don't understand is how they get away with this. Your telling me that we are paying them to unload their crap they ordered, even when drivers are not allowed to unload it. Something seems wrong with this picture.

I'm not sure if there was ever a time when I wasn't allowed to unload it.
Well my Company doesn't want me to. But the Consignee doesn't care how it gets offloaded.

Anyways, it boils down to insurance reasons

40 years ago some guys would hang around by the gate
you would throw them a 20 and get a lil sleep
they organised now lumper gets 20 and 5 levels of managment get the rest
soon the mexicans huddled at home depot will organise and housing cost will rise

With the company paying the fees, do you really want to unload it yourself?

I forgot the name of that place over Birmingham. Those guys see you before you even get parked in that little truck stop there. They'll be on the CB asking you questions and stuff. Then they'll pull up and give you cards. Those ole boys drive nice cars. They have a monopoly on unloading at that place. I think it was piggly Wiggly wasn't it. Wasn't real fun to back into either once you got in.

YOU are not paying them to unload their freight; YOUR company is. YOUR company has also negotiated the lumper fee's into the rate with either the shipper or broker or receiver.

Why does it even matter?? Alot of drivers always complain about this but WHY???

Yep it is the piggly wiggly. Back in the day they would run up to your truck make a deal then ride on your step till you got in. Today those same guys are legit with PW
