Oh, dear, how horribly sad :( And the son witnessed it, too. Awful.

Yes, it's a good reminder not to follow too closely but when it's really busy and traffic is packed, it's not always possible, unfortunately. Been there, seen that.

Now that it's winter here, Mike keeps a huge following distance but he drives nights now - no amount of traffic and nothing like the big cities.

This is such a sad story and my heart hurts for the familiy....I try so very hard to be as careful as I can, and I drive with caution everyday...I know accidents happen, but I pray every time I start up my truck and ask God to keep me safe and all the other drivers that I meet otr...

sad story right before the holidays to. Let me tell you guys something about following distance. I was driving in the Northeast 3 days ago and I kept a 7 second following distance to the car in front of me as I always try to do. When all of a sudden he hits his brakes and I hit mine the roads where kinda wet and I slid up to him i had to jerk the wheel and take the shoulder to avoid hitting him. Poor guy just sat there looking at me scared out of whits as was I. My truck runs 65mph So I wasnt high tailing either. The roads could have been wet in this guys case also. I live near st Louis and my wife said its been wet off and on for awhile.

I lived in KC for 10 years and hauled horses back and forth from KC to Lexington Ky. I cannot think one trip that I did not see a crash on I 70. It is a very bad road, that has heavy trafic and lots of speeders. My prayers go out to the family for thier lose.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. The little 12 year old girl died Friday afternoon. The father has been upgraded to fair condition the last I heard(yesterday), so thankfully he'll be ok. I was wrong about one thing...there are TWO boys in the family, I only knew of the one that was a year behind my son. Regardless, it is such a tragedy. Thankfully the TT driver is ok from what the reports said, he's going to need some prayers too because I cannot imagine being in his shoes.

It COULD have been prevented, too...the cause was a 25 year old moron driver who tried to pass a TT on the enterance ramp...ran into the grass, came off onto the highway, sideswiped another TT, then hit 2 cars. Then the bad accident happened, and the idiot ran from the scene. He's been located, and is in jail. I bet he'll have all sorts of charges against him.

I can't tell you how many crashes I have seen of big rigs smashing into the rear ends of smaller vehicles killing innocent people. It's the same old story. Although the trucker did not cause the first accident he sure as hell is reponsible for the second fatal one. Had he been traveling the speed and distance he was suppose to be for the conditions he would have stopped in time. The vehicle in front of him was not involved in the first accident and only slowed to a stop. I drive that route everyday and he had a clear line of sight. Had the trucker been paying attention the accident never would of happened. Are you guys seriously going to make the statement that well sometimes it happens you cant stop a big rig like a car. If you cant stop in time if the vehicle in front of you stops without smashing into it then you have no business driving a truck in traffic. Seriously if you guys have that attitude stay the ..... away from me and my kids traffic.

Are you for real? you think no matter what you can stop a big truck just like car in traffic? your not a truck driver you must drive a straight truck or a pickup. Dont start that crap with me I have had several close calls going as slow as 40 and as fast as 65. go b!tch elsewhere dude.

i think what he is saying is that if you are a professional driver, than you are supposed to keep a safe and secure following distance. Heck even if you aren't a professional driver, if you drive anything. If it takes longer to stop than increase the distance between you!

My condolences go out to the family. I drove that part of I-70 yesterday, as on many other occasions, and it has not changed traffic wise. Lots of speeders weaving in and out of traffic. All of them cutting in front of me into my safe following zone and probably not realizing the danger they just placed themselves in should they make a mistake and suddenly brake. In response, I eased off throttle and continuously adjusted my safe following distance. Besides weaving speeders there is another traffic problem that happens. I was traveling in the center lane with safe following distance. There was a lane merging skirmish between 3 or 4 cars ahead of me who all suddenly slammed on their brakes. I immediately put my hazard flashers on, down shifted, and safely braked. The cars ahead of me did not get into a fender bender. I was able to safely slow and continued my trip without further incident.
