Helloooo from the MotorCity

Happy new year, everybody!

Just joined this forum to get more info on the trucking industry. I am in my mid-20, and making a career change. I never knew why I never thought of getting into truck driving before, since I love to drive. Petrol is my biggest personal expense, since I drive everywhere, even if I do not have to be at the destination. Anyway, I just realized that the conventional idea of going to school, get good grades, go to a good college, get some more good grades and an internship, and then working a good "white collar" job, is not working for me. Think it might be a quarter life crisis.

Anyway, my ideal lifestyle is to be an entrepreneurial truck driver (maybe owner operator down the line or side business(es) that goes along with the nomadic lifestyle of truck driving) I have worked in retail/restaurant/office environments all my working life. Now that I have what many consider to be a good corporate job (i.e. good benefits/pay), I am still making the change to being a truck driver. I know my parents (stereotypical Asian parents) are going to freak out and try to convince me out of this. Maybe I will not tell them for a little bit or at all and just say I am out on work travel My close friends are supportive as long as I know why I want to make the change. Anyway, my mind is set... I plan to drive. It is a done deal. I have been looking around at schools mainly comparing TrainCo, Inc & International Trucking School and planning my two weeks notice.

2 questions:

Anybody recommend one school over the other (TrainCo vs International Trucking School)?
Also, anybody here made a career change, from a white collar industry to truck driving? If so, let me know, I might pick your brain.

Any advice to a newbie would be greatly appreciated, too.

Chinatown, I have never heard of MSC before, until you mentioned it. That seems like an awesome time for a person in their 20s! I was previously thinking of joining a commercial cruise ship, but never took further action to pursue it besides the thought. MSC seems very exciting. Do you know if they hire a person who does not know how to swim yet, but is willing to learn?


goblue, yessir, I am from SE Michigan. Glad to know I'm not the only one changing career. Michigan's not that bad... haha Anyway, go Blue! even though that was a tough lost they had against the Gamecocks . ::sigh:: next year! I am glad Rich Rod is out though.
