Thanks for the honest replies. I figured I really had missed something from other thread. I tend to let my mind consider many things when driving. Such as the "meaning of life" Coonan may have had a point.

When a action that I can't understand is sugggested as "better/safer/etc" and I can't figure out why. I like to ask. I have learned a lot that way.
Some of the replies make good points about when it is safer. I.E. crowded, dark, etc but in AM most trucks will be gone, daylight, room, not using toothpicks to keep eyes open.... -
Just to throw a monkey wrench in the whole works, what about the places that "almost" FORCE you to nose in? I'm thinking the Petro in Portage WI, and all Idle-Airs Or whatever they're called these days?
As I think I said before, I'll nose in just hoping for better "quiet". I'll deal with backing out when I am through with my 10 hrs, and well rested. -
Nosing in into an angled spot, such as Idle-Aire locations, is different than nosing in where the slots are at 90 degrees to the travel portion of the parking lot. Those IA slots are the only ones I will nose into, and I think I've done it once or twice in the last five years.Trucail Thanks this.

That's why you use GOAL. Never back if you aren't sure what you're backing into, or out of. Get out of the truck, and look.
DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
Well. Larry, I won't nose in if there is a row of trucks behind me, but the way they are designing these new truckstops with wide open parking to the curb, I would nose in them. then you have the parking lots that are slightly inclined, i would nose into those as well, so I won't roll out the bed while sleeping. When I'm ready to back out, I check my surroundings, put my flashers on, with the CB radio turned up just in case someone hollers on it, and proceed with caution to back out. And besides that, have you seen some of these drivers try to back in to a spot, if they are gonna hit something, I'll prefer they hit they trailer, and not my truck.

How did they nose-in during the all-cabover days?
Cab-in??

You got Jokes 48!! The question is WHAT NOSE?
-
Exactly. So you can't call it "nose-in". All ya got is the cab, so............

Glad I found this again. We had our safety rep from our insurance agent in yesterday and I asked him about this. And while he didn't have the data with him (says he will look for it) but "backing out of spot" is an actual category in parking lot accidents. As he said, so few drivers are dumb enough to do it but it happens enough to make it out of the "other" category that tells you how unsafe it is.
