Anyone ever drive for either of these companies? Particularly in Michigan? I'm looking for a local gig in northern MI and there is a Saia terminal about 30 miles from home and Estes is about 60 miles from home. Curious about the usual details...pay, treatment etc. I am an O/O at the moment but its looking like I may have to approach things a little differently to get a local gig in my area that gets me home daily. Any info about these companies is appreciated!

As for LTL, Estes is bottom of the barrel your doing ok with Saia.

60-70k a yr for an 1st year extraboard linehaul driver is not bad for bottom of the barrell Estes.

linehaul driver not getting hourly pay on the yard.If your run doesn't cancel the Good runs go to Shiny wheel teams(Covenant) etc. Estes Buys used trucks.
60-70K their Calculator must be broken too. Extra board 60k I am calling B.S. How much dock time do you do a day? One good week does not make a year.
I know 2 teams that run for Estes out of Fontana and 2 bid drivers, this is their info they stink.
Yeah Sounds great!!Last edited: Jan 5, 2013

tend to agree on saia, noticed they payout sign on bonuses in some parts of country
estes used to be the better one, r & l also, but some wheres along the way both have bottomed out quite a bit. might have seen where a driver is nearly blackmailed into using trucks previous written as unsafe -
When I ran for Saia, the TM at Grand rapids Quoted as "A Diva" and he didn't deal with drivers and the DF was a screamer with everyone on egg shells.
Sometimes you would get screwed by someone taking your truck on a line haul (Sun night), and you up getting stuck in a farm truck for a week in systems.
Other then cleaning your truck out every night, not knowing if it would be back in time, and waiting for the motel shuttle, it was a cash machine. -
Well I was leaning towards applying at saia. They are closer to home and seem to be a decent company. I'm more interested in the local position and seeing how that goes. I'm really just over the long trips.

You wont work the dock as an estes linehaul driver. But you won't be at home every day either. 60-70K for your 1st year at Estes is common. Now a P&D driver, you will probably work the dock but you're also home everyday. Can't speak for Saia

60-70k for Estes?1st yr?Not bad for today even. This company was buying and or building terminals as fast as they could find em at one point. Plus those daycabs they use with the xtra room behind the driver look great. Understand they are supreme noise boxes though?. I'd say its an even shot between Estes and Saia, R & L looks good on paper, but because of their equipment issues, and the stories I've heard told from their current drivers, a no go for me personally,
