I wanted to wait until I had quit to write this but have had it. People need to know. I have been with this company 3 months and can honestly say they do not give a rats butt about thier drivers. Here is what I have experienced. numerous times the route suggestion they give you is completely wrong. however they expect you to use it. I just took a load from Denver Co to Medford Or. depending on which highways you take the route can be anywhere from 1228 miles in an automobile (not sure if it is a good ruck route or not) to about 1350. Knights preplan listed 1236 paid miles. the route they told me to go. (I-25N, !-80W, US-395N, CA-36W, CA-44W, CA-89W, I-5N) is 1353 miles 120 more than the preplan said it was. Not only did I end up driving 120 miles for free but they base thier fuel bonus on your MPG against miles driven. In other words, shifting at proper RPM, keeping up with tire pressure, etc. is only part of what factors in. If you drive the thruck "out of route" those miles make your milage decrease. because they only paid me 1236 miles for a 1350 mile run. those extra 120 go against me so it makes it harder to get the fuel bonus they talk about on top of driving for free. Yor are in essence actually paying them for driving thier truck.

In 3 months here I have had to literally fight for my pay 6 times. paperwork I transflowed went missing and even after saving and having the transflow recipt number on hand was still told I would not be paid. I had to re transflow and wait anouther week. A couple weeks ago I took home time on a thursday and only had 1 run for the week. while off I noticed another local run from October that I had never been paid for. I called my DM and got it taken care of. when I got my paycheck I only had the local job from October on it. I called and they told me I would not get paid this week for the job I transflowed 4 days earlier because they did not show it. even thought I provided the transflow recipt number. All I got paid for was the local run from October. my pay check was $33.98. I lost a windshield wiper blade in a snow storm in New Mexico and took an advance to buy new ones. transflowed the recipt as my DM told me. next week no reimbursement I call payroll, I am told I have to fax the recipt to my DM and he has to send in a purchase order. I did, next week noy pay for it. It took a month to get $13 for the wiper blades.

My first week here I screwed up on my hours of service. Knight still uses the old HOS system Werner came up with in the early 90's and it is a pain to use. I called safety in Pheonix to get it fixed. I had been driving about 7 or 8 hours that day. when the safety guy "fixed" my logs he informed me that I now had 9 hours left to drive. I told him something was wrong that I had no where near that many hours. His reply? you do now, go ahead and drive it. This was the safety dept. telling me this. I have also been intructed to drive on line 5 numerous times. For new people, line 5 is an actual catagory that can be used for off duty driving for personal use, you are supposed to be bobtailing when you use it. only some companies use it. and it has to be approved by DOT for the companies that do.

the trucks on board computer is so tied into the truck it is insane. I am sitting in Southern California right now the sun going through the windows is warming the truck up quite well. even with the windows open. however, because the outside temp is below 62 I cannot run the AC. the computer has it disabled. even if i did it would go against my fuel bonus and idling the truck more than 10% causes the governor to slow the truck down to 52 mph. But get this, with 12 volt plug in fans and stuff running to cool the truck down you are using battery power. when it runs low you have to run the truck to charge the battery which goes against your milage bonus. Knight only runs 3 batteries in thier trucks instead of the normal 4 batteries they should have in order to save money. battery power dies much faster.

Counteless times in the last 3 months I have been given wrong directions, bad pickup and delivery times. not told specific pickup numbers that I needed at customer locations. been late at shippers because I show up on time do not have the number I need so I have to call and wait on hold sometimes as long as 1.5 hours to talk to a DM. Usually you are on hold about 30 minutes. etc. etc etc. this company sucks.

I forgot to add, I know that Knight as well as the other large companies has people who scan these forums and I can expect to seek retribution from Knight for writing this while I still work here. I would expect nothing less from a dishonest company. it will only serve to prove how you really are. It would seem to me that if I had a company I cared about and wanted to grow that I would listen and care about my employees, they are the ones who make things happen in any company but i am sure that will not be the case. it will only make me want to leave that much worse and you can replace me with someone right out of school and watch your CSA score go down the toilet as your employee retention rate falls. just like all the other big companies.

So you're still with Knight huh?Is it really worth it trying to get that fuel and mileage bonus?Sounds like they like ripping the drivers off as much as possible I bet their bonuses are laughable. What you described about knight is very common in trucking sad to say,and especially with big companies.Look how long it took you to get your reibursement and you have to go thru many channels to get anything done or resolved. That safety guy should get fired.I would have turned him in for messing with my logs.If Knight talks to you about this thread, just tell them like it is.Most companies do not care about their drivers unless you do them a favor. In trucking you are just a number. The people in the offices including dispatchers are the pencil pushing pretty boy type and truckers to them are scum so of course they don't care about the truckers.

Brother, I am very sorry to inform you of this but... you have made a big mistake getting into the trucking business. All, and I do mean ALL the major carriers are as bad as what you have just experienced with Knight. Along with an absolutely horrible lifestyle, this is a very, very low paying industry. You're looking at $25,000 $35,000 a year TOPS. And that is to work 100 hrs a week and rarely go home. Also, if you want health insurance, it will cost you almost the equivilent of a weeks' wages per month (while the company only contributes about $100.00 a month). And, contrary to what some people will tell you (either in trucking school or on posts on this forum) it does'nt get much better with time and/or experience with a company. And beware the paid, professional bloggers on this forum that are working for the trucking companies; their goal is to keep the newbies misinformed so that there will be a steady flow of replacement drivers to fill the void left by the experienced drivers that are leaving in droves as a result of the low, low pay, along with everything else. Seriously, delivering pizzas pays as much or better than these jobs, and you go home every night. There are some smaller, family owned trucking companies that do treat and pay their drivers better than the big carriers and these would be your best bet for a decent living.

I made $900 last week. Yes, everything you say on here is correct. Remember that you are still kind of new. There are a few things you need to learn..things you cannot get "trained" on, that only come with time and experience. Don't give up. If you feel something is wrong and/or illegal, talk to your fm. If he says go, then go. Also remember that anytime your dispatcher calls you to ask you a question on something, it's not him asking you this, it might be the load planner, customer service agent, market mngr, ops mngr, or a fm from another terminal (you might be in their territory) Your dispatcher already knows everything about you, or that truck. If i get a phone call from my fm, i know someone in that office needs to ask me something.

Just last week i got a call from my fm, asking "are you sure you'll make this appt"? i'm thinking, dude you have my truck pulled up on your screen, you can see my hos and ping the truck to where i'm at(miles to shipper) ....so i respond< "is it customer servive"? he said, "yep". I said, "tell 'em not to worry, i'll be there" he said, "ok cool" and that was that. Most guys would have taken offense to that question, but these are things lots of people don't really know.

Very unlikely in my opinion. I hope that doesn't happen. Been at it for 8 years, and the only things that have changed are the rules and regs of the industry. Driver pay is steady. Oh and the DOT physical hasn't changed a bit. I've been able to pass the DOT phyisical since 2004, BP meds and all. I avg 45k doing otr. I'm not greedy.

I'd hate to be the first to point this out, but after 5 years of driving why on Earth are you still driving for starter companies? Talk about selling yourself the short end of the stick.

That is in fact a good question. Well, first trucking job i had was a local one. Did it for 4 years. It also payed $10.00 Per hour. It was also non-union, after my second year i got a raise, for .38 cents per hour. The good thing about this job was, you could work as much overtime as youd like. It was all driver load/unload. 100 stops daily, all over southern cal.Very back breaking. I was making 25k per year. Long story short, i quit.

Got into otr, did much less my first year, about 18k. But work was steady. After a couple years my pay went up, and sort of stayed there. I like doing this better than the local truck driving job i had.

My family (uncles) on my dad's side are ALL truckers. Owner operators in California. They pull 53's locally and do ok. They have their own customers.I tried the o/op thing and got burned out in 1 year. I stay because this a steady and respectable career to have. I'm proud of what i do, and so is my wife and family.
