I was looking at the new trucks on the lot at KW the other day while waiting for my clutch to get fixed. It seems to me the quality of KW is not the same on the new trucks as it is on my '05 model. The paint job on the new ones looks all "orange peely" and doesn't look to have the same depth of color. Also the paint on the chassis is flakey and looks real thin.
I was in one of the brand new t660's talking to one of our company drivers last week and his truck had water leaking into the cab around the interior light fittings and also from the upper console area. This is a brand new truck just delivered. For $130,000 I would expect a lot better quality. Why is the quality so low?
My '05 still has a shiny paint job and doesn't leak a drop inside. Is the cost of manufacturing pushing the quality lower? I allways thought I was a diehard KW fan but lately I don't think I would be buying one going on what I have seen.
What kind of build quality are you guys seeing on your new trucks? I'm tossing around the idea of a possible new purchase in the next year or two and am looking at different manufacturers. So far KW is off my list from what I've seen. What's the quality of the new Western Stars? I like the interior options they offer but I haven't got up close and personal with one yet.
I read on here that peterbilt has dropped there standards abit lately as well. Mostly regarding the quality of the paint work.

That's exactly what I found, I posted a bunch of pictures in the Kenworth forum. A lot of the paint was running and very orange peely, and didn't match the rest of the truck at all. It was terrible.

Quality has dropped for the past decade or so from Pete and KW. Some issues may be from producing more trucks since a few bigger fleets are now buying them. I am not a factory insider, but KW may have started using a new paint system and it has some major bugs to work out. Either way their is no excuse for sending out sloppy finished products.

If you really want to get upset tear apart your dash and spend a day looking around. I found major wiring issues while diagnosing a short for my windshield washer. What I found was major harnesses ran around and through steel/alum brackets with little or no protection from chaffing. After checking around this is a bigger issue and many OEM shops already know about it.

When they build 70 trucks in 8 hours the quality will fall, I'm with PT, since the large companies have started buying from Paccar they have went to the quantity not quality mentality to keep up. Also, if it was built in Chillicothe, chances are it was assembled mostly by people that have no business putting a truck together.

The paint surprises me though, when I went thru the factory the finishes looked good, maybe they have went to a faster system and quality has suffered.

The frame paint will not last in the northern areas either . I painted the frame on my old kw which still works around here. And that paint is in better shape than my new kw. A little upsetting to say the least.

Also I've always had an intermittent water leak around the seal for the extended cab.

Paccar does not have the exclusive. It is the great American way.
How cheap can we make it and how much can we charge.
Quality comes a very distant second place to profit.
IMO, this is the universal business practice these days.
The people/companies that still take pride in a good job (Mr. Haney,far_call, etc comes to mind) are extremely rare. :biggrin_25514:

Quality control on all trucks is horrible. If any car manufacturer put out the same crap that truck companies do, they would be out of business. Its pathetic if you ask me

Paccars quality has fell below other brands. I drive a 11 model freightliner . Been in service as a trainer truck for all 265 k miles . No rattles . Threads on here about new Pete's with 13000 miles falling apart. Would not think twice , the western star is a great choice !

Sadly, there is a dirty phrase that is becoming more and more common, "useful service life". Trucks are designed and built with that pretense. Manufactures don't come right out and say it, but trucks are built to have a useful service life of about 7 years. After that they feel the truck should be replaced with new. Of course, profit is the most important to any company. Profit is important to me, and should be important to you too. But for those who want and need their trucks for longer than the designed "useful service life" you are going to have to expect more repairs than previous generations of the same model.
