How everybody doing? My name is Tony, and I wanted a little insight to this opportunity. I came across this Craigslist ad http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/mnu/3518801351.html and it looks promising for a life changing career. I talked to the man he says that I will be sent a bus ticket to go to the west coast for training, first I have to pay $65 reg fee then once I get there pay $100 for 3 wk orientation. They will provide meals/lodging and a $200 loan per wk if I need it then I got 3 months PRE training at $600 per wk. Sounds great right? My 2 concerns are 1. Is this a scam? 2. I've smoked weed within the past month (recently quit, judge me if you want) so I'm wondering when will my first drug test pop up. Thanks for any comments shared, positive and negative

Welcome to the site from another Tony....Tony! Remember one thing man....If it sounds too good to be true it usually is. Also if you choose to smoke pot this may not be the field for you to try..not judging its your choice. But on almost any trucking job you will have to pass a PRE-EMPLOYMENT drug screen and will be subject to random drugs screens from then on. If you can give the drugs up then give yourself time to get it out of your system then go to a good community college close by to get your training...they will give you better instruction and most have a job placement program upon your graduation. But if you can't give up the pot my advice is don't try and get a job where you will driving something 70 ft long that bends in the middle, and can weigh 80,000 lbs or more....Just an old retired drivers point of view.

Regardless of the terms they offer, they are in no way bound to these terms and can change them at any time. Since you did partake so recently, that would likely be the first thing to shut you down in this endeavor so you would need money for a bus ticket home and you would still owe them money for training.

not gonna judge but stay clean for the next 6 months before even attempting the process of getting your CDL, companies do hair testing which goes back alot farther then urine and blood testing

I can't comment on their deal as far as the drug testing goes ( most places nowadays require a drug screen up-front)..but to be on the safe side give yourself 6 months or so like 91b20H8 said and while you are doing that do some research on different schools that are close to your area so you can cut some of the commute out or better yet try and find a tech school close by that offers CDL training...IMO that is your best bet....BTW Congrats on kicking the habit! Good luck

I looked at the Craigslist post. This company, Alliance Trucking is hired by companies to recruite new drivers. The person you talked to has one agenda and that is to get you to orientation. They will tell you what ever they need to to get you there. Thats how they get paid. I question the $600 per week for training and the $200 a week advance during training. Your not making the company money while your getting your CDL. There are several good companies you can look at to "get experience". My choice was Schneider and it worked out well for me. You will hear 100's of stories good and bad about Mega Carriers who hire almost anyone. Take those with a grain of salt. A lot of those stories, the bad ones, come from people who are mad at someone or they just can't cut it as a driver. It's not for everyone. Trucking is a lifestyle not a job. You either love it or hate it. I would also suggest stay "clean" for at least 3 months. You will get a drug test immediately when you get orientation.

Usually the first thing they do is drug test you. So if you want to get into trucking start by being 6 months drug free like some one else already said. And then after you enter the field prepare to be always drug free as drug tests are common place. Simply put this is not the industry for marijuana users.

As far as this opportunity goes I'd pass. You'll get bused off to the other side of the country and who knows what kind of conditions they will put you up in? What if they'll decide to dismiss you and not give you return bus fare? I'd look for a local CDL school or community college after you get cleaned up off course.

Sounds like a scam...I would not trust it.

Find a local school and enroll to earn your CDL and stay clean as frequent drug testing will be part of your future. Some companies will even pay for you to attend training.

Did I miss something? I've never heard of a registration fee to join a trucking company. Is this a new thing? You get a bus ticket and paid orientation, but you have to pay a fee?
