As for the paint. A friend of mine is in the industry and sais you can thank california for that one also. Some regulation changing the chemistry of new paint to make it better for the environment.

As a result a good paint job has increased in price.

I have to disagree with you. My 99 volvo had hard cheap plastic everywhere. Maybe in Europe it's different? The 2002 T800 I bought is leaps and bounds ahead in interior quality except for noise. That's due to iron vs aluminum.

I don't know how to get pics from my iPhone to this forum, I got to drive a 99 freightliner ( century ) and ride in a 2002 peterbilt ,379 ( I think ) neither one had good build quality the freightliner being really bad, it rattled like hell, you could move the dash with your hand and the whole thing was very flimsy inside, the peterbilt was better screwed together, it had a better ride for starters due in part I think to a 2 point cab suspension, something I've never seen in a truck before is that the doors actually leaked in both of them . I would hate to be in a crash with either of them, there is absolutely no crash protection them either.
I am reliably told that KW are a far better product, it would be a pity to see them put quantity before quality like other manufacturers

Kw's in the US have plastic dashes? The kw's in AUS have a vinel covered fiberglass dash with aluminium panels screwed into it. I can only count a couple of panels in my kenny that are plastic which go up beside the windscreen the door trim and the steering column cover,

Yeah thats the flat dash. They use this dash for the more rugged models. It is about 2 inches lower than the curved dash so it gives better visibility.
These models use the flat dash

The highway trucks and other models have the curved dash. One of the reasons is these models use a cab that it 15cm taller and 10cm longer so they can easily fit the taller dash.

    The T403, T409, T609, T909 use this dash.
