I think that time (and not messing up again driving-wise) are going to be your best bets.
You might also want to check into having your record expunged.
There are so many potential employers that will phrase the question 'have you ever...' And then you're screwed.
But, that being said, be honest with your potential employers because you don't want be accused of being a liar if you fail to include any of your history.
At some places, it's a dismissible offense.
Best of luck.

The DUI stuff is going to prevent you from getting a job. As it should. You've proven you can't be responsible enough to do something as simple as stay sober before you drive.
aiwiron, TRKRSHONEY and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this. -
I think the most important question is have you quit drinking? You'll find most truckers don't drink and the younger ones that do eventually quit. It doesn't mix with the job. You go trucking you marry the job and what comes with it.
If you get two DWI's in a POV while a CDL holder you lose your CMV privileges for life. Since you had a regular license it still leaves a possibility but it won't be easy when you demonstrated a total disregard for traffic laws. You just have to find the right company and convince them you are a changed man. Usually they look at an application and pick the best qualified or in a newbie case one that has demonstrated they don't get tickets and has a solid employment record. When you compare 10 applicants yours is #10. Unless they are filling 10 seats they are going to pass on yours.
If a felon out of prison can get a driving job so can you. It just depends how much you want it and are you willing to accept a whole bunch of rejection before you find it. Some companies won't touch you until you have 7-10 years between you and the DWI. Your case is more like 10 years. Attending a Substance Abuse Program and getting a recommendation would help you a lot in obtaining driving employment with your past.
Many think truck driving is a gravy job and a quick way to make great money and nobody looks over your shoulder which is far from the truth. The whole world is your supervisor. You have hundreds of federal regulations to follow or face fines in the thousands. You work hours of two regular jobs and never the same shift. You get small checks until you get some experience. You deal with rude and ugly all day long driving among idiots. Getting a job is one thing, dealing with it is another. With your record if you find a driving job it is going to be a low paying crappy one and you'll have to deal with it for a year before you get a better opportunity. Are you willing to tough it out? Finding a driving job is only half your problem.
Don't think trucking is your only solution. You have to train for any good job. Maybe try an apprenticeship with a trade union. You earn and learn there too. Or even go get an associates degree or technical certificate. You can survive off student loans and a part time job.Tonythetruckerdude and TRKRSHONEY Thank this. -
Than Gambler, you need to think smaller. Try local lumber yards, trash hauling, furniture delivery.
Good luck, your record will prevent you from being hired by most employers. It shows a lack of responsibility of action.CondoCruiser Thanks this. -
Ask youself this... What have I done to make myself more hireable? Have you taken any classes that represent a true feeling of responsibility... AA, defensive driving, spoke to school children about the evils of drinking and driving.
All I can say is that if I was hiring I could not hire you because there are 10 other applicants with spotless records and my insurance will be that much cheaper.
I would say don't give up but increase your marketability... to things that show you care about your community... sorry but this is beyond just trucking... -
I don't think many companies will hire you to drive. Even if insurance would cover you who wants to put someone with 2 DWI's behind the wheel. If you get in a accident (they do happen), lawyers would be jumping up and down to get a shot at the company.
I would look for another line of work. The only jobs that might be available are the ones at the bottom of the barrel.
Good luck.Tonythetruckerdude Thanks this. -
Gardner; ask yourself a simple question: You have $150,000 invested in equipment and you want the best driver in the seat , would you put someone in that seat that has a record like yours? I wish you luck but only time can fix your driving record, there is no magic answer.
TRKRSHONEY and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this. -
you also fail to have any consideration for those that have been directly affected by drunk drivers. i may be more of a hardliner than most when it comes to the penalities, but that comes as a result of living with someone who was hit by a drunk driver. thankfully she wasnt killed, but she suffers every day as a result of permanent back injuries. while you may have suffered a bit from the tiny fine and the few days in jail (maybe), its nothing compared to the lives that many drunk drivers snuff out or alter forever. for you to be so matter of fact about it, and then so incensed by the negative reactions, tells me you have changed little. perhaps youve learned the lesson of not getting behind the wheel after you get plastered, but you seem to still have some serious problems relating to the feelings of others...seem very self centered, especially for someone whose 30th birthday is in the rear view mirror.Tonythetruckerdude and TRKRSHONEY Thank this.
