My C15 6NZ cat has developed a "headache"; either a gasket or a cracked head. In a few weeks, I am going to pull the head to see which. I live in the Raleigh/Durham area of NC. Does anyone know of a good machine shop in NC that is familiar with big diesels (especially Cats) who can check the head for cracks?

    Also:
    1. Is a cracked head repairable?
    2. I've seen ads for reman heads and re-machined heads. what does this mean?
    3. Most heads I've seen for sale want a core; can I get core credit if my head is cracked?

Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated. And thanks for you support:biggrin_25514:

They will just about always be cracked between the valves. Carolina auto in charlotte can pressure test. And there is a place in Wilson. Mans name is Scott Nichols I'd recommend them. As for welding diesel cast in Blaine,MN . If going cat I'd do the upgrade to new option. RW

I don't know if the cat shop that I have to deal with is bs'n me or not but the only option right now for a head was a new one. something along the line of that's all that is available right now. price was $4100. but that could be different where your at.

I wonder if ceramic coating would prevent the cracking, really who hasnt pulled a cylinder head and not found it cracked between the valves?

Sounds like BS to me. I was told by my CAT dealer anytime a customer ordered a reman anything if CAT didn't have it on hand they would supply "new" at the lower "reman price". He said with turbos they hardly ever had any remans and customers almost always get a new one for reman price.

I wish i had dealers like yall do...If mine are out of reman heads, I have to wait for one to come in. Never been offered new at reman price.

I replaced a lot of Cat heads with re-mans and the head in the box is many times a new casting, it is not visible from the outside what you get.
We never had a problem getting the head it was the other parts that were the problem. If you order ALL the parts when you take it apart, that gives the dealer the best chance to get the parts.
Cat has a regional representative you might want to call them and voice you concerns, talk to them, yelling will get you a dial tone.
