My Freightliner had another interesting trait , in addition to the shift pattern. The previous owner had turned the " pump " up considerably. When you attempted to drive under load in OD , it didn't take long for the engine to overheat. Reminded me of Scotty on Star Trek and his " laws of physics " spiel ! Not enough radiator. A horsepower is 33,000 ft. lbs./minute , or 2545 btu. per horsepower hour , 3413 btu. per KWh. Immutable , as they say ! I had to get A bigger radiator, 6 coils deep. (Burn more fuel , dissipate more heat !) I turned the pump down some also, All OK....... Lessons learned as A kid messing with cars . Putting A 750 CFM Holley double pumper on my Chevy 327 , without changing anything else, did not create A " hot rod " ! It created A mess, an expensive one that wouldn't even idle , let alone compete at the drags ! It all worked in my favor though. The guy thought the truck was FUBAR and I got it for $800.00...........

Don't worry, that actually happened to me after leaving Werner for Schneider. Werner drives 9-speed top 2 trannys while Schneider has 10-speed. You should have seen the test out rider's eyes when I kept skipping 6th gear lol!

Today the components in most trucks are pretty much standard , really not too difficult to figure out due to the limited variables. Some years ago I worked for A dry bulk hauler who had all Mack day cabs . Fleet upgrades created A mix of B and R models with A wide array of driveline components......Mack Triplex , Quadraplex , big box 20 speed , OD, small box 18 speed , 9 speed overdrive , and A few Duplex , leading into the straight 5 speed Maxitorque coupled with the 300+ Engines. 1 Diamond T , 290 Cummins , 10 speed Road Ranger going through A 2 speed Brownie , which was not user friendly shifting while in motion......There was also A Mack version of Road Ranger and on into Mack 12 speeds ( sorta' triplex with air shifted auxilliary) , very nice to drive , I think , and also A kinda' clone of the Spicer SST , air shift, that seemed to be A " junky " version of the 2 stick , 6x4 Spicer which caused far fewer problems.....Took me some years to overcome my distrust of " air + transmission combinations ". Had A Mack with A PTO , 10 speed air shift with no stick position for reverse, only an air shuttle that could render you " forward only " if it hung up in sub-zero weather.....Today , all pretty much the same , and not nearly as entertaining. And then the women driving to work in the morning stopped wearing mini-skirts .......

i use a 9 speed also, so pretend this is a 10 speed, i start in 1st then go to second, then third, then flip into high and go into 6th. i do this because the momentum has pushed me enough to go into 6th and still be at 1400 rpms. i shift at 2000 rpms, try this it may work for you (i haul at 92k pounds by the way)

I think you just answered my question I be looking for an answer, my truck is a 9 speed supposed to be, but if I go from 4th flip high go to 5th just like a normal 8speed, but I can also go from 4th gear flip to high go back down to low and shift like I guess 9speed, if I goto 4th on low, flip switch I can't go into the gear in low spot on high side, does this make sense to you

    Not anymore.

I've been in auto's for many years, and you just revived a 9 year old (almost to the day) death thread.
