I'm looking at getting into trucking, OTR. I have a clean driving record and no felonies/misdemeaners.
The thing I'm worried about is my work history. I've been on SSDI (disability) since 2004 for a non-work related illness. I'm now healthy and ready to take on truck driving. From 06'-09' I was helping care for a sick family member. Sicne then I've been going to school part time for language. About two years ago I started working part-time, helping out my family's business, but they've been paying me under the table. As of a couple of months ago, I convinced them to start paying me over the table. (technically I'm self employed)

I'm just wondering is this is enough for a company to hire me?

Right now I'm looking at schools in my area, and in a few weeks I have an appointment with the DOR (Department of Rehabilitaion) to get a grant to cover the costs of school...

Is it too early to try to get pre-hires?

Apply to trucking schools that will train you, and you should be good to go! Good luck

I am pretty sure you will be able to talk one of the starter companies to hire you I would call them individually to find out were your best chances are . You may find that your training company is a good place to stay long term or maby after a year you will be able to go somewhere else but I am pretty sure you can find a job with a class a cdl and a clean reccord there is a definite driver shortage now most of the guys that drove in the seventys and eightys are starting to retire my dad and most of his buddies are out of the industry now when he was driving he applied for a company that had three job openings and fifty applicants that's not the case anymore its fifty jobs and three applicants .

Age? Can you document all the info about work history you mentioned. Once you get the funds before you commit to a private driving school,or one of the mega-carriers schools, check out the tech schools in the area, some may offer CDL training and may help out with job placement after you finish. You will get much better training and won't have to worry about traveling anywhere. Good Luck!

As long as you can document your work experience and have your family verify when you worked there you should be fine. Companies are required by the DOT to verify 3 years of non-driving work history for a new CDL holder, or 10 years of history for a CDL holder.

Nope not too early at all to start applying,in fact I strongly encourage it and tell the recruiter what you told us.I don't think you'll have any troble finding a company that'll hire you but you must have proof of you being self employed. So ask your relation for a written statement or whatever the trucking company request.

I'm 34. I'm pretty sure I want to go the private school route, since company sponsored training comes with lower pay, and if it doesn't go right, I may end up owing them. Unfortunately, there aren't any community colleges that offer CDL courses where I live (SF bay area). But fortunatley, the DOR is there to help pay for private school.

I can definitely provide written statements, but since most of the time its been under the table, I don't have any other documentaion...

The lack of verifiable work history is going to be an obstacle.

Do not spend your money on a private school until you are certain you will be hired.
    Shop around first.
A training company may be your best option.
Take a community college course to help get your permit first, then you may not need to be obligated for a driving school.

Trucking schools don't care if you're hireable, and having a CDL isn't going to matter either. Complete waste of money.

You will be hireable after CDL school, you just may not like the first company you work for, but that's OK, your foot will be in the door. The only company I know of that will hire you with no experience or CDL school is Panther Expedite. You still need a CDL though which you can get on your own. Go to their website & click on "Careers" and then on "Fleet Drivers". The site has No Experience Required for Cargo Van or Straight Truck.
