Is there a big differance with the 379 models. Do the letters after the numbers really mean anything. Also I want to find a model that weighs under 19000. Is that realistic with a loaded model? Which are easier to maintain years, for example pre-emission 04 , single turbo or just plain new.

I'm not up on this stuff like I used to be but I'll do my best here..

The cabs are all the same, if I remember correctly the extended hood is 127 inches where the short hood is like 119..

My fully loaded 379 extended hoods were well under 19k but they were late 90's models and one 2001....

Single turbo if you go Cat power w/pre-emission..

Get an oil sample and do a dyno run if you can.

flip flops is right; but the 119" hood is the 378, a 379 is the 127" extended hood

    pre-emission 04 & the single turbo are ur best bet. to me a 3406B with a 5X4 on 3:55's & u can't go wrong.

    just sayin

The 379 came in both long and short hood. The 378 has a 'glass hood (as opposed to aluminum on 379) that is slightly sloped due to the higher position of the cab and the same grill as 379.

They also made a 379x in 05 and 06 with the twin turbo motors they are long hoods. To me they are the best looking factory truck on the inside but you want the early model CATs for sure pre-03. The 3406B is hard to beat.

The 379 has the short hood, has a slight downward slope

The 379exhd is the extended hood, the hood goes straight out without any slope and is also 8-10" longer I believe

Then they had the 379x which is the special edition which has the brushed aluminum dash and cabinet doors. It also has the extended straight hood with no slope

377,378 and 379 cabs are all the same. 378 is a 119 BBC with fiberglass hood.379 comes as a 119 BBC standard length or 127 BBC extended length hood, both of those are aluminium hoods.

    DrtyDiesel Thanks this.

I'm seeing everyone recommending single turbo. so a 2005 379 exh w/ acert cat twin turbo's is not a good idea?

the 379 was built between 1987 and 2007. it was available with two hood options- 119'' aluminium and 127'' aluminium and both are sloped. these may also have beeb availabe in Carhauler versions too with no slope, but 99% of all 379's have a slope. Look closely.
There is no "379 ex" or "379EXHD" the hood lenght was just an option so they are all just "379"

the 379X was a special edition built between 2004 and 2006 and they all had the 127'' hood, 70'' sleeper, big power, polished hood centre trim, polished aluminium fenders, stainless steel hood/breather/cab/sleeper skirts w/panelite milennium series LED lighting, 7'' dynaflex pipes, "brushed aluminium look" dash panels, 2-tone black and grey interior, whelan bros chrome shifter assembly, stainless and laser cut custom shifter plate, and a few others I don't recall at the moment.
It did not have a special "extended long hood" but a regular 127''I have a facebook page set up for the 379X if y'all wanna check it out

    My dad has a 2004 379 w/119'' hood, I have a 1999 379 w/127'' hood and a 2005 379X.

Sorry but a 379exhd is a real thing. That is the model for the 127" hood without the slope. While 379exhd might not be the model number from Peterbilt, it's what's used to tell the two options apart on paper.

    Here's a 379 with sloped hood

Exhd has almost no slope and of course a longer hood.
