As an OTR driver and you need to stay in a hotel, who pays?

    Depends on the company. The hazmat/tanker company I worked for paid for hotel once a week for a 34 hour restart and also for breakdowns. This was for all drivers, if you have been there 1 week or 20 years. Every company writes their own policy. Didn't have that benefit with flatbed or reefer. Seems companies specializing in hazmat are more free with the money for the drivers beneft.

    Swift has paid for my motel rooms when my truck has been in the shop.

    Got sick recently so had to postpone my sim class in Phoenix, and was down for several days.
    Still in the same truck.
    Maybe one trick is to not get sick while in a terminal. Or, if you do, move yourself to a nearby truck stop before you go OOS.

    But no, they won't foot the bill just so you can be frivolous.

    My company pays for my hotel rooms....ALL the time..(LaQuinta, Marriott, Hampton Inns etc-NO "Motel 6 or that garbage)...because I DON'T have a sleeper on my nifty Kenworth day-cab...(Fed-Ex)

    My boss makes me pay for my own motel rooms.

    Course, I'm my own boss too.

    Yup husband paid for his own motel bills too when he was broke down where he was at. With US X we spent one weekend in WI brokedown and they paid for it. The rest of the breakdowns Volvo was good about moving the truck out of the shop where we could stay in it. They had the kitchen, etc to cook in, all we needed was the beds.

    Now he is company with another company and I imagine they will pay for a motel only on a breakdown.

    I've worked for foodservice companies that had a different approach to this... Why would you idle your truck all night when you can stay in a hotel for cheaper? With a corporate lodging card (clclodging) it's pretty easy to find a hotel with truck parking for less than $45 including taxes. Not to mention, it helps your drivers be more comfortable. Yes, you can get a APU but if your company runs mostly 1,2 or 3 day routes it will take forever to get any return on your investment.

    At $5500 installed for a used APU, you would get your ROI back in less than 5 months. (138 days). Especially considering I would be spending $45 to 60 per night on fuel.

    It would have paid for itself in 10 months. After that, it's pure profit. Considering mines been on the truck for 8300 hours and still going. That's some real money there. Thermo-Kings has APU's with over 20K hours on them as well.

    Depends on what the OAT is, and what your truck is equipped with. You don't need to idle every time you park.
