For those of you that receive or pay out mpg bonuses, what is the average?

    Thanks!

I buy my own fuel and if I drive 55 instead of 65 in a full day I will keep $40 in my pocket when I fuel.

That should give you an idea what a measly pittance the boss gives a company driver for a whole month of draggin'arse and freezing/sweating all night.

Don't know never have gotten it. There is alot of factors in our bonus program and I don't ever qualify for it. I have to many out of route miles and not the greatest fuel mileage.

    That's $1120/month (4 days off), $3360/quarter, or $13,440/year. $13 million for a company with 1000 trucks... Measly pittance? I'll say

    Yes.
But if we all drove 55 how much would be lost due to longer transit times, and the increased pay to compensate?
Because if I were made to limit my speed to 55, I would need/want/demand several cpm more.

And I'll not freeze or sweat all night. I idle as needs be. (but I try not to idle more than that.)

It's really a toss up, the balance between bottom line fuel mileage and productivity. IMO.

Ours is escalating starting at 1 cent per mile for the quarter at 6.5 mpg and an additional cent for every half a gallon above that. Oh and we have APU's.

We also get a separate cent a mile safety bonus, and a cent a mile if your over the average per month bonus.

Of course you should sit down and figure out for yourself how to best optimize your own profits. I'm just saying those relatively small differences in single fill-ups do make a huge difference cumulatively.

And if you're not able to get enough freight to run 3000 miles/week (which the majority of solo drivers on this board don't seem to exceed these days), you really don't have the need to run 65mph all the time.

Not that much unless you have open appointment times.

Have any of you run the numbers? It would appear the company is highly motivated to save in fuel costs. Someone smarter than I can check my math, but I made a simple spreadsheet.
