Virginia cites high toll rates in proposed 'buyback' of private toll road
Virginia taxpayers may end up spending millions of dollars to buy back a privately operated toll road. Lawmakers are searching for the means to buy back the 14-mile Dulles Greenway, saying the state can set toll rates lower than the current operator, a consortium owned by Macquarie Infrastructure Group of Australia.

How about just outlawing toll roads altogether, and paying for roads with the fuel tax like it's supposed to be done?
-
because the roads are already paid with fuel tax
they divert the revenue from tolls for other pet projects
its a scam, from the beginning to the end
talking to a toll collector in nyc, said flat out, their money goes to port authority, homeland security, and other things, and virtually NONE of it goes to the roads (ever look at NYC roads?)
o, most importantly, it goes to the investors of the tolls, they were guaranteed a certain profit from the bonds and other things they invested in
and we get to foot the bill -

Allowing the private sector to dictate the terms of public-private partnershipsincluding toll roads is like allowing a fox to guard the henhouse. The FederalHighway Administration is proposing model language to states on howpublic-private partnerships should be financed, developed and constructed toprotect public interests. OOIDA plans to comment on the proposal.

Virginia lawmakers are prepared to take matters into their own hands with tollrates in the Dulles area. A leading Republican from Northern Virginia ispushing to buy the privately owned Dulles Greenway. The intent is to limit tollincreases on the commuter route. Another lawmaker from the same area is behinda separate effort to reduce toll rates on the Dulles Toll Road. -
This shows why it is not always "cheaper" to privatize government functions. Concur, tolls are scams.
-
o, its cheaper on the government, they dont have to pay for anything, and they get a vig to boot
its the working people and taxpayers that get it up the ............. nostrils -
The biggest scam is Illinois and I-80. Feds say they can't toll I-80 or lose funding. So IL calls that little 5 mile stretch I-80/I-294 so they can toll it. We all know for two interstates to join they must split. Otherwise the one ends (I-294) where it meets the other (I-80) and not end 5 miles down the road.
It surprises me nobody ever contested that scam. They make millions off that little stretch.
