I would say that flatbedding chose me more than the other way around. I love strapping down a load and take much more pride in it than I did filling a van with boxes. Sometimes the weather sucks, yeah, but there is a trade off in everything. Especially since there is almost no flatbed load that gets hand unloaded unlike with a van which a lot of times is hand unloaded. During high wind days here in the northeast, you can see vans getting pushed around like sails while a flatbed isn't affected unless you have a tall flat load. I got my start on small box straight jobs and ended up at a building supply company which had boxes and flats. Once I moved up to the flats, I was hooked and haven't looked back since. I got my class A before leaving that company and started to deliver auto parts in a 48' van which was the most strenuous and physically challenging job in trucking I've ever had. My next gig after that was flatbed and even though the hrs. were just as crazy if not more as the auto parts job, I wasn't nowhere near as worn out. You can also get away with much more in terms of height restrictions with a flat that you could never do with any other trailer.
