I'm currently looking for a replacement head for my '99 475 Cat 3406e. I've heard conflicting opinions regarding which heads will work on which motor. I have a 1LW motor, the only used head I've found is from a 5EK motor. My mechanic thinks there is a difference between the two applications. My reman distributor says I can bolt on any 3406e head, and even a c15 unit would work. Can't afford a new unit from CAT. Anyone been here before??

Your distributor is correct. Any C15 (pre-acert) or 3406E head will work.

Some thing I found on YouTube. Explains the difference in heads and shows differences.

Interesting. I actually had no idea about the oil ports being different in the blocks. Although I did know they are different head gasket numbers. Also I don't think they started using the relief cuts in the heads until MBNs and newer.

I thought the relief cuts came in when they started calling them c15, c16 or 6nz or 7cz but I'm not sure myself.
-
I'm actually not positive on that either.

Thanks for passing along the information. Made sense of the whole situation, and I was able to score a healthy used head that's compatible with my block.

Great Video thanks!

i'm not sure but my uncles 2WS has the relief cut head with double springs you should call your local kenworth dealer and see if they have one around. My uncle got his there and worked out a bundle deal with the parts manager since he was gonna spend 4k+ because he bought hoses and some valves or you can get a used one and send it off to the machine shop

Tearing my 2ws this week or fist week of feb. ill see what it looks like and report back.
