Have you been in expedite? I ask because you run a lot different than traditional OTR. They have to pay more per mile but you also sit a lot more.
-
I've never done expedite; can you explain "they run a lot different" ? ~~ the O/O will pay .40 per loaded mile only... zero cents for dead-head ~~
-
Expedited freight is mostly freight that needs to be deliver in fast amount of time mostly within 24 hours but can be freight that is last minute orders etc. Most expedited trucks are teams but not all and rates are higher than avg going rate.As for Try Hours they are one of the top expedited companies but not as large like Panther or Fedex Custom Critical.Since I been in expediting I heard mostly good things about them not sure how much freight they haul but heard they are a good company. Now as for .40 cpm per mile, make sure when you read the contract that the owner pays fuel and tolls and the normal pay is normally either a 60/40 percent or 40/60 percent who ever pays fuel gets 60% plus 100% of fsc and same amount percent for deadhead and empty moves.Sounds like he trying to cut corners which is a big red flag but .40 cpm is not bad but there a lot of deadhead miles in expedited, sometimes you might have to deadhead over 100 miles at time but not all the time tho.

The O/O conveniently omitted the other items you've mentioned; seems as though he capitalized on my ignorance since my prior experience is elsewhere; yep, red flag for sure; nevertheless, I'm confident he and I would have had a discussion at the moment of signing contracts; one thing I won't be involved in is 1099 which I think is the norm for this situation. I miss the old uncomplicated days when men had scruples which is a rarity today. As of this writing I may entertain buying one of those econo vans for expediting; not a huge investment unless the money isn't there at the other end then it's a bankruptcy thing I'm sure; commenting on the van, I've been told that it's not ICC regulated so, no log book or stopping at scales... is that true? And, what are your thoughts about the purchase of a van?
-
Yes no log books required for vans but did hear something about that may change but really haven't heard of any changes as of yet.Yep no scales either and my thoughts on vans,I never drove a van but I also been looking into buying a van and run it my self but from what I have read from other forums vans are good income but better if you drive it your self. Not sure what the numbers are but there money in vans as long you contract with the right expedited company or used brokers.
-
No log books and not money. Many expediting companies are not even leasing on cargo vans. Expect $.89-.90/ loaded mile if you stay out of bad markets.
And starting out you have to work with someone. Ever see a cargo van load posted ITS or other boards? Small, exclusive community. -
Never done cargo vans but from my experience since I been in expediting there money to be made in vans,no your not going make six figures a year but its a nice income for those who don't need to make six figure income per year.I have spoke to few van owners who do very well and most that do the best are van o/o who drive them,if you going contract a driver to drive your van yea the income will be less but as driver and owner, you can make a good income.I always tell people if your going to do cargo vans don't hire drivers cause its not really worth it unless you don't mine making few hundred bucks per week after expenses and paying your driver. As for .89 .90 cents per mile that's pretty good, who pays that rate?
