I did a search for "U Turn" & "U Turns" & "Turn" on the Virginia Commercial Drivers Manual, pdf file and it has nothing in it concerning U Turns one way or the other. It seems you are correct.

Nothing wrong with doing a u turn if you do it in a safe place with no traffic. I would never do it on a busy street and you should never do it in the medium of a interstate. Another thing to consider is your trailer swing so that you don't take out a lite pole or a parked truck or car. I will always go around the block if that's possible.

Is it just me, or was that a weird place for the car to hit the truck at? You would have thought the impact would have been on the other side...

I was just saying... Now, you see why they make it a policy. It only takes that one time.

There are Commercial Drivers and there are Professional Drivers... any professional drivers knows not to do that

Don't try looking it up, it's not a written law, it's common sense.

By the looks of where the car impacted the truck, it was trying to pass just before the truck initiated the uturn.

That's what it looked like to me also. Most likely it was still a little dark, and car may have not expected the truck to turn in front of it; truck didn't notice the car come up and initiated the turn and bam. I'll bet the truck driver is really beating himself up, luckily no one was killed.

Can you cite the federal or state law(s) that cover this?

Then perhaps you should have said that it's not a good idea rather than implying that it is a legal requirement. We all know that you've got a problem with authority, but please don't start making up your own laws.

living in salt lake. i can say that dawn doesn't start till 7. the sun don't rise till after 8.

businesses are on the west side of the street. the east side is fenced off and nothing but field. means that truck was traveling south on 900 west. and made a east bound uturn. the street is also lit up. so it's possible the truck didn't recognize car lights blended with the street lights.

he may have been parked on the side and just suddenly decided to swerve around without bothering to check his mirros. but like i said. sams club was only a block away. he could have easily pulled into that parking lot and turned around in.

I once made a uturn on CA98 in Calexico, CA near the truck border crossing. Trying to get back to that little truckstop in the industrial park because my load wasnt ready and I missed the side entrance. I just made sure no traffic was coming.
