I pay cash for my fuel all the time after my credit/debit card info was stolen. Plus some stops have a policy in place requiring them to hold onto the card while fueling...this is HIGHLY disagree with. Add in the fact that I hate standing in line to get the pump turned on just adds to the fact. As for fuel cards, I have checked into a few and do not like the charges ComData has in place. FleetOne is a joke with customer service when it comes to getting a account set up and even during use.

As for carrying large sums of cash...no biggie. Get a high quality lock box that can be mounted in a obscure place in the truck. Keep all the money locked in there until needed and tell no one about it. I learned the hard way about trusting the credit and fuel card industry from fraud. Ended up getting $1,283 charged to me and my card shut off while under a load 400 miles from home. Luckly I had enough fuel to get home, start the paperwork process, and get cash for fuel. The amount was returned about 10 days later by my bank, but it was a eye opening experience. All cards are super easy to clone (a lot easier than you think) and leaves you very exposed. I will also add that I fuel at smaller chains that are normally lower than the major fuel stops that many times sit right across the street.

I know if it came down to it. officials can get all the info they want. thru subpoena & other court orders if needed. I am just not going to volunteer any info. let me say where I take my position from. about several months ago I was reading landline or h.d.t magazine. a story in it talked about a driver getting pulled over for a roadside inspection. while the officer was in the cab area & the driver pulling out his d.l., med card, he pulled out other cards. a fuel card was out. the officer grabbed the card & went to his patrol car, typed in the card number & saw the last transaction made on that card. time & transaction. the article went on to say the drivers record of duty did match the electronic transaction. but it gave a warning to other drivers.

It is best to make sure that your fuel purchases match your logs. All fuel cards are time stamped. It may not show on the receipt, but the owner of the fuel card can track your movements based upon your purchases. When I have pulled up my account, I can see the exact time and place of the purchase. It also shows me the driver who made the purchase. As long as your fuel purchases match your logs, you should not have a problem with the dot finding that your logs are not legal.
