By the looks of some of the headache racks I see I think some guys might be doing that.

Could put several boxes under the trailer.
Though I've got 2 down each side and an under belly box in the middle and still not enough room so I had to add a 4' deep drom box behind my cab.
Drom boxes qualifies as headache rack with most companies.

Also have racks between my spread axles for my ramps.

I probably do carry to much stuff. With a step, have to be quite verstile. I carry 4 tarps (1 coil tarp), moving blankets (tarp protection), approx. 30 straps, 4 porta winches, 13 chains, snap binders, ratchet binders, bundees, 4x4 dundage, wide load banners, flags, portable beacon lights, coil racks, bundee rope, porta ratchets, ladder, lawn chair, case of water and pop, and little more stuff for playing. And like to keep room to carry my bike in drom bike during summer time.

Just never enough storage space. Hopefully you won't notice the 3 large junk boxes on the side of the truck also.

With stepdeck vs flatbed, I think I need to be more versatile as there is 1/5 the freight available for step. Even more so for RGN

Flightline, it's better to have it and NOT need it, then to need it and NOT have it.

I tend to have that problem with laundry bags. I have a stack of about 8 or 9 at home because I always leave them there after doing my laundry. I have 2 extras in the truck now lol
