seems to me everyone has missed the point if it doesnt start without ether when it is cold
it isnt sesors or fuel lines at least in the 30 odd engines i have had
it is a tired engine without good compression
Detroit won't start when cold????

He's used a lot of starting fluid on it, hope he hasn't broken the compression rings.
-
So get a cylinder contribution reading for the engine and find out if compression is an issue
-
Possible, but it started fine before it sat for a week. My experience with tired engines is more progressive, like it takes longer to start, has more blow-by, using more oil, etc. There was always signs of getting tired, not ran great last week and now it doesn't start.
Not saying your wrong, I'd just check it out first before I thew a lot of money at an in-frame. -
you can live with an engine that runs fine after it starts with ether for years
i presume there is nothing really wrong -
Personally, I would like to read an update from the OP.

Still checking things out. The mechanic swears it is not a sensor issue since it runs so good. He thinks it is a leaking injector.
-
I could be wrong, but I don't see how _A_ leaking injector would cause a no-start. If that's what it is, then a simple fuel pressure test would eliminate that as a cause. Sounds to me like he wants to sell you some injectors.

When it starts does it pour out white smoke for 30 seconds or more?
-
No. It puffs out some black smoke but not real bad. The other day we had it started and i let it sit and idle for about 5 hrs. After that it would puff out white smoke when I goose the engine, but even that stopped after hitting it a few times.
