But some of us just like running all the time. If I made in 1800 miles what I do in 3000 I would still want to run the 3000 and make more. I would be going nuts just sitting around. Maybe I just haven't been doing this long enough...LOL

Most of us would like that, but because most companies have went to short hauls because it pays the company more money then doing the coast to coast type loads. They have you sitting till night time to get those just in time loads that deliver 1st thing that morning. Some have the long hauls but I would prepare myself for the crappy stuff so it wont blind side you when it happens. Most of the people who come into this industry thinks its all run and gun but you do lots of sitting and waiting.

Just saying high expectations ruins marriages and career's. So just hope you know what you are getting yourself into. I have a page called Real Time Trip Planning on the experienced thread and It shows you how I run. Sometimes I can have a week that averages 600 miles a day and the next week is only averaging 400 miles a day. I would like all to avg 600 a day but that's not my call. You take what you can get because cry babies just get ignored and starved out because dispatchers don't want to hear all that crying.

I agree 100% if you start crying about not getting miles you will get less. All you have to do is start out at the bottom and show what you can do. Once you do that then you will work your way up. Yes I know I have only been doing this for a year OTR but I will tell you that when I first started I busted my butt and with in 3 months I was working my way in to longer runs. The thing about it is though is that the company i work for there are guys that run less miles then me and make the same amount in short haul pay and split pay, I am just the person that likes to put it on the trailer and not touch it for a day and a half or so.

The best thing I can say is research the company you are going to work for thoroughly before you start. Oh and btw I am home every weekend may not be long by choice but i am home every weekend.

It will be difficult to find a carrier that will get you home every weekend starting out. I don't know where you live, but there is a company called Big G Express that gets drivers home most weekends. The problem is that I don't think they hire inexperienced drivers. You may concentrate on getting some experience for a year or so and they your chances of finding a carrier that can get you home weekends will be greatly improved. Starting out, the most important thing you need to do is get experience and learn. Make sure you keep your MVR and CSA clean. After a couple of years of solid experience and a clean record, you can go pretty much anywhere you want.

You will have to choose between either being home or getting good miles. Typically you are going to spend 6-8 weeks out if you are wanting 3000 miles a week. Dispatchers sort their drivers into different piles. They have a pile for drivers who stay out and they have a pile for drivers that go home all the time. Pile A gets the good miles and good runs. Pile B does all the crap runs and dirty work and usually they keep them closer to home because it is a pain in the butt to get them home all the time.

Maybe let us know where you are currently living and we can give some better company decisions.

As of now I would recommend staying away from the mega-carriers. Smaller companies are going to pay better and give you more miles. At the mega-carriers you will just be a number and issued routes and miles randomly according to what pile you are in.

If you want to be home weekly, forget three thousand miles. I left the army and everyone wanted to hire me but only for the taxes. The military years as a transporter did not count. So they got an experienced driver with military skills for 32 cents a mile and maybe 24oo miles a week to start. And I was home every other weekent. Life sucks bro. Then your out here and you get more experience. Then people start listening. Dont job hop. And for the record, 3600 miles a week in a 65 mile an hour truck is reachable goal, and not the reason for E Logs. The reason for E Logs is for the ######### that couldn't pull over to rest when they needed it. Military life I ran 36 to 48 Hr missions sometimes, its not hard. But for the Dummy that wakes up in the ditch, why did you make us go to E Log. U should have stopped for a nap before driving onward.

Then your dad is running as a team driver, or he's lying on his log book. It's impossible to get 3,000 miles a week as a solo driver and be home 2 nights a week. HOS regulations do not allow for that.
