Hello ive been a driver for about 10 years many moons ago I was independent. For the last several ive been a co driver making very good money id leis to go independant again. My question is this ive been tracking the expenses on the co truck for the past year and wouldnlike to know if this is a good barometer for the expenses regarding my own truck. I'm referring to breakdowns and maintenance not the extras I would have to spend for.better fuel mileage etc.

Thats almost impossible to answer due to what I would call " the luck of the draw". What I mean by that is, it all depends on how lucky you are in a way that you get a decent truck that doesn't break down or have any serious or even minor mechanical issues.

Yes, your write off's for being an O/O are incredible for sure. Laundry, so many things, I even noticed how my tax rate for the last quarter is 10% for both Fed and State taxes. Whereas the norm for any employee is around 25% for Fed and State taxes.

Thats just one example, there are many more.

My story is, I was a company driver off and on for over 16 yrs, then I just got my first truck. Its quite a culture shock, at least for me it is.

In my recent past, I had some company trucks that never had a problem, just ran great, no hassles, nothing was wrong with them. And too, I had a lemon, a piece of junk that broke down every chance it could, and as often as it could. It hated me and I hated it!!!!!!!

    So you just don't know.

Actually now, I don't hesitate one bit on spending money on my truck to change the oil every 7 - 8 weeks, to get other maintainence done and whatever else I can think of to do, to make this truck not only run better, but to last for the years to come.

So its not the same, driving a company truck that you don't have to pay one dime to maintain, verses your own truck that you may want to 'baby' every chance you get.

Not to mention, just pure luck in finding one you can trust, and that will keep you moving.

In a nutshell, its just being lucky, kind of , maybe, ???

Just some scattered thoughts. But I will tell you, once you own your own truck, your vocabulary will come down to two words. "How Much?" They will fly into your mind at the start of every thought, and just naturally be more often than not, the words you say at the beginning of every sentence you make concerning your own truck. "How Much?"""

I say them all the time, and think them even more.

Good Luck to you, on whatever you decide to do.
