New (to me) SWR Problem

    Hello all. Well, got the el-chepo swr meter, hooked it up, and 40 is about a 1.7 which isnt bad and channel 1 barely reads at all. So, lower the antenna to raise channel one and lower channel 40. Sounds simple, except cutting/lowering the whip lowers the swr on all the channela and in fact causes channel 1 to not regester a swr at all.

    Any input?

    Dont see a problem. The only antenna I ever got matching SWR's is on my single coil 10k. I'm currently running a K40Plus just for something different and basically have the same situation. 1 doesnt budge, 40 is just under 2 and ch 20 is around 1.3 ish.

    Tech guru Handlebar should be along later today to give you the scientific explanation.

    Just talked to the local cb shop (werent answering at the time I posted this) and they said the same. I just always thought the swr had to move a LITTLE bit, but I guess not. In that case I have a 1.0 on 1 and 1.2 on 40...and to top it off, the internal swr on my cobra 29 is dead on!

    What happened is that your antenna was originally matched below channel 1 (which is typical), and when you trimmed the antenna, it moved the resonant point up to channel 1.

    Trim a bit more, and you should be able to make 1.3:1 or less on all 40 channels.
