well technically you can hire on if the carrier wants to except your license or permit saying you can drive, you wouldnt have to do a road test. I stand corrected. 391.31 says as road test is requiref unless as stated above. I think most reputable carriers will perform this especially changing trlr type and to see if any bad habits they may notice.

The roadtest is not a big deal. They want you to pass it, not send you home. I saw a guy at Stevens fail backing test (hit a trailer), fail the road test (twice) and still got hired on.

Thought I'd give some insight on Shaffer. Been working for them since August of last year. Started out pretty decent was getting decent runs and decent weekly miles. After about 3-4 months my miles and decent runs started to decline. I've been out on the road for 3 weeks now since leaving home. In those three weeks the best week I've had was around 1700 miles. Here I sit now with a 300 mile run I was forced to pick up on Monday the 21st and it was originally set to deliver yesterday on the 23rd. turned out that the delivery information was incorrect and I've been forced to wait until tonight the 24th to deliver this load. I asked about compensation for having to wait an extra 36 hours and was just outright declined. I gave my terminal manager notice that I want to get off of Shaffer and switch to Crete. If it doesn't happen in a few weeks I'll be turning in my truck and keys.

There are so many drivers looking for a company that hires out of Florida!! You should start a new thread promoting that company..You'll make a fortune in recruiting bonuses! ( no I'm not bein a smart@$$)

Probably a very good move. I started with Crete on 2/7/12, and have yet to even go through FL, let alone TO it. Good luck at Heyl....heard good things about them.

True, but in my conversations over the last few months, solos are fairing far better on the Crete side then the Schaffer side. I know my miles haven't been terrible this month so far. More shorty stuff, but in gross, not too bad.

We are a new team with Shaffer, and getting the solo runs also. I'm wondering what the heck we were thinking, Crete/Shaffer seem just like every other starter company.
