Id rather bounce to Canada and get something that pays better then 4k on a 4700 mile trip. Id rather bounce back to TX empty and go right back loaded for 30k.

There could be a lot of partials for that rate. A trip to Texas would be at the higher end. Still, at $4K times 24 trips would be $96K per year. Myself, I wouldn't turn down $96K. One of the reasons the rate up there is higher because of the possibility of returning empty. This is where your negotiation skills come into play, negotiate the rate upwards. Also, find direct freight. I'm thinking with trips that often, you might be returning empty more often than not.

Id have no problem returning to the NW empty if the rate going up is as good as SHC posted. Wouldnt take but a couple days to get down there. Im not familiar at all with Canada or rates or the lanes up there for freight coming back to the US. I guess im going to have to start researching this some more as this is something I would be willing to do.

To me though at 4k for 4700 miles id be in the whole hauling that, atleast on that one way trip. It may be 96k but if it cost you 120k to run it whats the point?

$120K minus $96K is $24K, $24K is $96K better than $120K. Using you scenario of bouncing back empty. In other words, I would be $96K richer than you by doing marginally more work, worse case. But, I'm not trying to tell you that you are wrong or right, just what I would do in the same circumstances. I would still be out there trying to find better paying freight. I never called Landstar or BNSF to see what those pipe loads from Prudhoe to Houston were paying. It could have been a much higher rate, though I'm sure the rate was less than the rate going up. The rates I am talking about are just my observations, rates that were posted. I didn't call and negotiate on any of them.milskired Thanks this.

We had some loads out of Houston going up there last year paying just shy of 16k, Until this thread I have never heard of or seen anything going up there for much more than that, and I wouldn't believe it unless I seen it with my own eyes.

Typically its around 16 k for a load to Ak from Houston and 11K from Wa to Ak. Theres not much outbound freight from Ak so the price will cover the bounce out. You might want to check out my thread called Driving to Alaska in the experienced truckers advice section. Its docked there.
