Thanks Cy for the encouragement, and thank you to everyone else who has read and posted here.
I wanted to let everyone know that I applied for a part-time driving job with Metro here in Houston. I was contacted and was asked to take a test. Apparently, I don't have the right attitude... err apptitude to be a bus driver .
In my full time job, I have access to income information for all of my customers. One particular individual is a drivers helper for a LTL company and he is making more than I am and is home almost every night. I may contact this company and get some more info.
This journey has definately taken some interesting turns

We all get what we need, whether we like it or not.Brianman72 Thanks this. -
It is probably better that I didn't get the Metro job. You start off as a part time driver, there is no set schedule, and the most you could work in a week is 33 hours. They said that it could take up to 2 years to get hired on full time.
I know things will work out.Dinomite Thanks this. -
My sister's lives in Montreal, works for the province of QC. The pay is low, and she had been looking for a better job. Having some driving experience as a school bus driver, she applied for a city bus driver job. She passed the test, aced the interview, but turned the job down. Yes, eventually (after a few years), she would have doubled her salary as a state (province) worker, but the hours were horrible. Some nights, some days, weekends and holidays a must, etc...
BTW, she just got her permanent employee status at the DMV after 11 years of working there. In Canada, unless you are a visible minority, good luck working for the gov't. The minorities get hired as permanent from day one, plus they'll get the job before anyone else regardless of qualifications.
Sorry to get off subject, but you're a state employee applying for a bus driving job made me think of her.
About LTL jobs, they're out there. Call your local Conway terminal. Also, ODFL (Old Dominion). All of the ODFL drivers I know (and I know a few) got their job w/ no OTR experience. Conway has a training program for LTL, usually start in February/March.
Keep in mind that driving LTL, most drivers work long days, come home at night way after the kids are in bed, and gone before they wake up. You are home for the weekend. The pay is good.
It almost sounds like a dedicated or regional OTR job would be easier. -
VTshooter, may I ask what bus company you drive for? I also thought of looking into that option, but there is practically no public transportation in my area. I live just outside of Bennington, VT. I don't think there's any bus that will take me up to Rutland or anywhere from here.

Hey lelou, thanks for the info. I have been looking at them also. There are some non-driving jobs that I have applied to. Wife wants to see what will happen with those first. If they don't pan out, then will move towards getting my CDL.
