I had a 99 kw w 900 with 550 cat 18 spd, never got less than 6.9mpg. Pulled like a mother trucker too. As said before drive like an old man, shift at 1500 when possible. Not really that aerodynamic. Was a flat top pulling a flatbed.

The problem with newer trucks is with all the emmisions control stuff on them getting good fuel mileage is a challenge! The worst engines for fuel mileage regardless of make are ones with just a DPF (diesel particulate filter). We have a 2008 Volvo with a D13 engine and even though it gets good fuel mileage it is still on average 1.5 MPG less than the 2013 D13 that uses the DEF fluid. I really thought when getting the new truck it would have the same MPG as the 2008 plus the added cost of DEF fluid, I was pleasantly surprised thank goodness! It's a far more economical truck than the 2008.
It works out at 2% of the diesel it uses, 2 gallons of DEF fluid to 100 gallons of diesel.
This is the problem the usual US engine manufactures are now having with their engines trying to keep up with Volvos technology.
7.2 to 9 MPG with emmisions restrictions is a feat in its self, especially in comparison to a pre 2004 engine!

That explains the brand spanking new 18 wheeler I rented for my IL DMV test drive getting over 10 mpg there and back with an empty 52 foot dry van.
It came out to 10, but when I was done fueling it, there was more fuel in it than when I took it out, so it has to be better than the 10 mpg I measured.

@archangel: ive been looking for a site with those capabilities bc it would make buying/spec'ing alot easier. I looked at '"mygauges.com" but im pretty sure that is for tracking your info and doesnt give you the ability to search other trucks. It would be nice for instance to select make and model and then have it display avg mpg of independant contractors that are specced different ways as well as a description of products they haul.

I bought 2 2013 International Prostars with ISX engines not to long ago both are seeing around 7 mpg speeds are limited at 65 mph.

I am happy with them so far.
