Commercial Truck Driver Arrested After Injury Hit & Run Crash - Highway 20 at Santiam Pass
    - 01/29/13
A commercial truck driver was arrested Monday night by Oregon State Police (OSP) in connection with an injury hit-and-run crash on Highway 20 in the Santiam Pass area. The suspect driver was found over 2 hours after the reported crash near Salem on Highway 22.

On January 28, 2013 at approximately 9:20 p.m., a commercial truck and semi-trailer was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 78 when the semi-trailer, which didn't have required chains, slid sideways on the snow-covered roadway into the eastbound lane where it collided with a 2004 Ford Focus with two occupants. A witness said the semi-trailer noticeably shook upon impact. The truck and semi-trailer stopped momentarily on the westbound side of the highway but then drove westbound without remaining at the scene leaving behind vehicle debris evidence.

OSP, Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Department, Black Butte Ranch Fire and Police departments, and ODOT responded to the scene. The Ford's two occupants were transported by ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for treatment of minor injuries. They were identified as driver HERMILO ESTRADA II, age 41, and passenger HOLLY HAMILTON, age 49, both from Bend.

At approximately midnight, an OSP trooper spotted a truck and semi-trailer westbound on Highway 22 near Salem and stopped it. Subsequent investigation led to the arrest of driver ALVIN JAMES ELLIS, age 59, from Beaverton. ELLIS was lodged in the Marion County Jail for Felony Fail to Perform Duties of Driver Involved in Injury Crash and Reckless Driving.

hope that #### never finds another driving job...and frankly, hope he spends a few years in prison. 10 is a nice round number.

ok perhaps. but in pokerhoundland, we would need to build more prisons. sentences for crimes which directly hurt others would involve more jail time, in some cases FAR more jail time. and NO reduction of sentence would EVER be allowed to reduce time more than 10%.

firstly, we dont know the whole story (the "victim" may have said she was ok, and he left, and later she changed her mind) or other type of scenario

even if he saw there was damage, but no one was hurt (seriously hurt) he thought he could get away. Stupid yes, criminal? hardly, a nice fine maybe but i cant see jail time

we already have too many people in jail for too many reasons, jail is not the answer for every problem in society

make him pay her medical bills and give her some restitution money, court costs, ambulance costs, car damages, etc

financial penalties unfairly favor the rich. prison sentences are both a punishment and a deterrent. of course (to be fair, assuming the facts presented are accurate) he should pay her restitution. and an ACCIDENT should not have resulted in a harsh penalty. but this is presented as a hit and run where the driver didnt even bother to check to see if the victims were hurt or dead. an extended stay in prison should be a given, should he be proven guilty.

and no, jail should not be the answer to every problem. but neither should be a system where a 10 year sentence means 18 months served. and ANY crime that directly causes another harm demands jail time. jmo.

I was the victim in this accident and I was mortified that he just left us up there on the mountain in a blizzard. We had traction tires and were driving 20 mph, his truck slid into our lane because he did not have his chains on. I was injured to the point where I could not get out and the whole drivers side of the car was ripped out and snow was pouring in. Our cell phones were smashed, we had glass in our mouths, embedded in our face, etc. If it had not been for another car that came by, stopped, put out flares so we were not hit again, and called paramedics we could have succumb to the elements. This truck driver should be punished in whatever way the courts see fit. We will, however be fine and hopefully have no permanent issues. :)

Wasn't even charged with a Felony Hit and Run? I thought leaving the scene of an accident in a commercial vehicle was a felony...
