Your trainer sounds like this jerk Mike Cromwell. That wasn't a joke earlier when I said just wait for him to ask you to join his wife and him. Gross. Same tactics, yell and scream and make you so angry you can't do it if you wanted to. Just be patient though man. It'll come to you. Hills are everywhere. Don't let them scare you, just respect it.

I have in this truck of mine the good ole Swift 8 speed. I always start off in 1st, 2nd if mt and 3rd if bobtail. I can not think of one time in all my years of driving have I started up a hill when loaded in 4th. I do not care what transmission you have. Correction, I do remember one time, and that was in an old Mack with a split gear lever. One was always on the high side.

Oh, I tried to clutch shift and couldn't do it well for a while. F that clutch if you ha e to float them in. That's where listening to the engine and timing come in. Some of the more seasoned drivers may say I'm a #######, but whatever works.

he was telling me to go faster in traffic that people were slowing down in

Teaching is VERY HARD and MOST PEOPLE have to LEARN to TEACH and and just TELLING people what to do is NOT teaching!!!! I just went through Phoenix academy and their instructors MOST of them had the ¨LEFT and RIGHT¨method where they stood in the yard and yelled ¨to the left!¨ ¨to the right!¨ ¨why don´t you listen!!!!¨ and on the road they had the ¨now, downshift... now.... etc...¨ and what happens is that those who have a PRE DISPOSITION for driving do well or KIND OFF -- and think they are awesome... hahahahahaha... I pity who mentors THEM!!!!
Same thing at the trucking School I just graduated from... they had the same thing and in the middle of the course they sent the ´´student whisperer´´ from head quarters to take care of all the guys from previous classes who were NOT passing and I was lucky to get thrown in that class... THIS GUY had three hand signals... a fist for STOP a finger to the temple for THINK and two fingers to the eyes for LOOK... he took us to the CLASSROOM -- and explained the laws of backing up... in the black board not next to a running truck...
1= if passed the middle of the landing gear or near it -- NO CoNTROL or LESS control
2- once you get the BEND you straighten the STEARS and the bend remains
He demonstrated the laws and EVERYONE was alley docking by the next afternoon in one pull up, even people who were way worse THAN ME!!!
Then, he explained the theory of downshifting 5+5 is 10th gear 4+5 is 9th gear 3+5 is 8th 2+5 is 7th 1+5 6th match the speed to 1800 rpm to our truck -- it varies a little ... everyone was downshifting.
He would coach one merry go round and the second merry go round he would pretend he was the CDL guy and count your points and pass you or fail you...
He was there 6 days and everyone in his class passed first try and then he left, and the only people who liked him in my school were the THE STUDENTS!!!!!!!!!!Raydar Thanks this. -
The biggest thing is that the student is willing to learn. If they have a attitude that they pretty much know it all, then it is already a lost cause. I have watched the students at the Fontana yard when they come back from driving, and never seen one that had a problem backing up. that instructor is good.
Raydar Thanks this. -
that is VERY true as well... there were some guys who thought they should be giving the class and all they knew was how to fail the cdl exam and it was a real hardship when they would start telling you how to do it and all you wanted is for them to shut up...

This was a 10 speed I was on which it was no different then what I had in school. I took the road test in a 8 speed and did all right. it was a little different. I think I could managed a 8 speed. it wasn't like I was messing up a lot it would be just every once in a while. He would get really upset though.
I just remembered something else the other day he told me it was "OK" to shift over the railroad tracks. I thought that was against the law in Cali? I know if you do it on the CDL you fail it. You know though he also said if I am going to slow I am a hazard and that maybe true but I would rather people go around me then me run someone over cause they slammed on their breaks to hard in front of me. I never really question him/talked back and I just went with what he said. I was going 40ish in a 45 zone.
I will give him credit. He did plan VERY VERY well or maybe he was just lucky with loads don't know which one it was. We were in Salt Lake City, Utah and didn't deliver till the next day. We got to the truck stop early and got one of the last parking spots. Then watch all the late arrivals come in and circle. it snowed 7 inches. We had another load going back to LA because he had "Home time" coming up. We got a message saying that load got put on hold then they said it might go out then it was no go. We got more loads and another one going back to LA so We snatched that up quickly. we booked it out of their cause it snowed again that night even more. There were times that were ok but many many more where he wasn't and to stay on I would have had to suck it up to much. I am not a person that would take a lot of crap and if I got upset enough(but that would take a lot) I would beat the hell out of him. I am a big teddy bear. 6'5 380 if you poke me enough I may come back at you. I normally just remove myself from the situation though.
We only stopped for dinner all the days we were out. nothing in between is that normal? I mean I didn't mind but really is that healthy?
Back in school I was taught that very same way to down shift. I was trying to go from 10th to 9th at 45 though that's when he told me to down shift at 55 it worked better.
to make a turn do you need to go through all the gears to get to the gear you need to be in or can you get to that certain speed and get into that gear. I am a little confused about that. I was trying to do that and he start to yell at me asking me(had a raised voice/yelling) why I wasn't down shifting in the middle of when I was trying to to down shift to the right gear for a higher one. it was nerve racking. I wasn't expecting it. So maybe I will just down shift all the way through the gears from now on instead.
I also think my logs are all screwed up because of him. when we were at drop offs he would put us off duty while they were unloading we were still in the truck and the first day I was on the truck he had me in the sleeper the whole time when I was sitting in the passenger seat trying to learn as we went over the grapevine. I didn't drive that day because I had gotten up at 2am to go over to Fontana and I was tired. We were heading up north and going over the grapevine. That first one may be right but I know I should have atleast been put on duty not driving for sitting in the passenger seat.Last edited: Feb 1, 2013
