I got 4 years driving exp. and 3.5 of those in flatbed which I know isn't a lot if time but I'm wanting to start in heavy haul. What I need is a company that offers heavy haul training any suggestions?

If your company doesnt do any oversize id look at either ATS or Keen. I dont think anyone offers OD training but youd have the ability to move up in load and size and the chance to get under diffrent trailers

I doubt any of the good companies will "train" per say. But a few should have no issue with you working your way up the ladder. I know our company machinery guys go straight to RGN's and steps, as it's all we haul!

ATS, Keen, Lonestar and Landstar all train for heavy haul the same way. You start at the bottom, and work your way up. Start with over width loads, the overweight, then over height, then over height over width overweight and they get bigger wider and heavier. What they look for is to see if you can follow permits, and figure out problems as they rise. Once you get over 12 feet wide, you run into whole new restrictions. Once you go over a certain weight, you see new restrictions, a certain length and the main one is. Certin height. Over 16 feet tall on the east coast and suddenly, you're playing in a whole new ball game. Pulling blades out west, not terribly difficult. Pulling blades into the northeast from Iowa takes 2 to 2.5 weeks! Pulling superloads into the northeast, in certain areas, you can only run certain days, like Tuesday and Wednesday between 9 and 3...THATS IT!

Before you get to that level, you will realize that you're on your own. There's no one in an office that can help you. You have to load, figure out what's needed, and how to overcome all obstacles. Hard job? It can be. The funny thing is, on one side of the spectrum in trucking, the HP is the person you avoid. On the other side of the spectrum, the HP is the only person that can even assist you. Yu get with that DOT certified full grown HP, go over everything, the routing and you sure are glad he's there.

While I'm on that subject, let me give a shout out to the Harris County motorcycle patrol. Getting some of the loads out of Houston or through Houston would be worlds more difficult without them.

But Triplesix, where your at they say if you have trouble call. We have people in the office that can help you...:biggrin_2559:
Plus saw one of your guys that is on general freight side that had on a J.D. tractor. I see you have different rules for tie down than the H.H. haul side...
Yes Harris county cops are great. I got them on the speed dial...
baltimore city cops are good also.
Alabama motorcyle cops were a blast years ago when I needed them. Ia. dot when escorting a ld. are a real pain...

ATS "owns" us, but so far have left us totally alone, thank God. Only thing that changed, besides a few guys quitting as soon as it was announced, is that we now get a fuel discount.
I know I have lent a helping hand to folks that have never done a lot of flatbed etc before that were hired here, but I think you will have that covered. Machinery only pulls RGN's and step decks. But RGN's are the vast majority of our machinery trailers, its just what we are set up to do. From 2 axle trailers to triple 3 trailers, and everything in between pretty much.
Shoot me a PM if you feel like it, with your email addy in there, and I can give you the scoop, dont want to turn this into a Midspec love fest....:biggrin_2559:
I have been here @8yrs, and no intentions on leaving anytime soon, Most of our guys have been here over 10yrs, so that says a lot when they are all good safe drivers.
