Safety my butt. It's about increasing mays bottom line. You become more of a hazard going that speed in wyoming nebraska and out east.

Look at the 55 mph restriction this way. If a driver at May is cut from 61 to 55 mph, the company stands to gain approximately .5 mpg better fuel economy. On a truck that averages 10k miles per month, that nets the company around $5, 000 per truck in fuel savings. They don't lose anything on the freight gross because of the way the delivery times are already scheduled the 6 mph reduction doesn't effect the gross paid to the truck.

However, the reduction in mph to the driver cuts his pay by approximately 9% in potential avaiable hrs to drive on his 70 hr clock. I estimated that to be about a $3, 500 per year pay cut. So, you newbies who are excited about May's .30 cpm entry level pay must realize that it's really only about .27 cpm if you are restricted to 55 mph.

In addition, how about some of you math wizards running the numbers on $5, 000 per truck potential savings to the company by implementing the 55 mph rule, multiplying that by 1, 000 trucks and tell me how much that nets the company on the backs of the drivers?

I rarely have a run that the difference between driving even at 55 or 60 makes a difference in me being able to make my appointments, unless it is a rescue from a breakdown. When I started, I used to get to every deliver ASAP and almost always sat at the con waiting for my
appointment time. Now I plan 1-2 hours before my appoint. I don't get any less miles than when I ran like a fool, and that was summer and this is winter, which is supposed to be slower. Even when I was near a yard and tried to drop early, it didn't do anything for my income.
What a lot of drivers don't realize is that part of our service is to warehouse the items, as the cons aren't really wanting to have the freight in there warehouse before they need it.
My problem with the speed limits is that I am tired of feeling like a jerk when 30 trucks in a row pass me, and I feel the low speed puts us in dangerous situations due to the unsafe habits of some of the other drivers on the road.

When I drove for May I was loaded or dropped early all the time. In addition, I learned how their logistics operated and made friends with folks in the company that could facilitate my dropping early at most of the company yards. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and the old addage, " it's not what you know, but who you know" comes to mind.

Good luck to all you guys because it seems to me that upper management is sucking the blood right out of most of you.

That's the benefit of having a good DM, i guess. My first DM would tell us to never call him, so I got no help from him, and my current DM has been with the company less time than I have, so he doesn't really know himself how to work the system. The fact that he is in Gary doesn't help either. Like I said before, this company is a path not a destination for me, so I roll with it until I can move to something better.

See scooter. This is why itd affect me. I do alot of drops/swaps cause I run hard to get it there. Lots of early early deliveries also. Like I said it's fine what it is now if my truck gets governed lower I'll go elsewhere. But thats prob what they want anyways. Keep the revolving door going. Next thing you know you'll be able to start training after a month.

this is the problem, that you can take ur sweet time getting somewhere, when in all reality they should be getting these appointments much sooner than they are. I did the same, at first I ran like mad to get there, then just sat around. after a while I just planned to run an even amount of time for each day, unless i was going thru like denver or to an area that I knew people/had family. If the company wanted to keep you running they wouldn't give you 7 days to complete a run that only takes 4. But, when they plan stuff TOO close, they tend to get a lot of late calls and all that so now everyone gets the extra 2 day or so buffer to make sure you make it on time.
