I am new here and would like to say thanks for all the info that is posted here. A lot of it is very helpful. I have been researching about getting a cdl a for a month now and have read many forums and have learned a lot. Now I do have concerns before I jump in with both feet. I have a perfect driving record and no criminal history at all. But I was told I should see a "shrink" after several family members passed away so I did and they put me an several different meds with no tests or confirmation that they where needed. Then the economy bottomed out and no one was gonna hire me on those meds so the "shrink" did the stuff to put me on disability. After a while and getting tired of "shrink" changes and different meds I decided to get off all meds and see if they where needed. I have been med free for a while now and feel fine and have none of the issues I did have. The thing is I don't know what they have on my medical history or if it will stop me from getting passed the dot physical. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I have no doubt that this is the lifestyle for me I have no kids and no fears of being away from home for long periods. I don't mind solitude. And have been fascinated by big rigs for years. Thanks in advance for your input.

Just because you decide you don't need medication doesn't exactly mean that you don't need them... Before you worry about the DOT Physical, perhaps you should make sure that you do not require medication. The last thing we need is someone with severe depression roaring towards a car load of kids... I hope that you will disclose your mental history with whomever does your DOT Physical.

And if there is no issues, you won't have any issues. Just be open and honest with everyone involved. This is not something where you should be looking for shortcuts.

I'm not going to take any short cuts I plan to do every thing by the book. And my prior issues are no longer present with out the meds. That is one reason I haven't started the process as of yet because I'm still testing myself so to speak. But I am afraid they may have jumped the gun a bit with the meds. When first put on them I was told I should stop taking them because they where over medicating and it was not needed. So no here I sit ready to better my life and move on from the few bad years and I'm stuck questioning everything trying to make sure I wont fail over some crap a "shrink" decided after talking to me twice.

I know from past experience with doctors, they are VERY quick to prescribe psychotropic drugs at the drop of any sign of "depression".

Especially when you have one or several major life events happening at once.

I think that is the case here I was figuring I would go in talk with. Them and that would be it. But nooo they started adding meds and the shrink would be there a couple times then it would be a different one then they would be gone have had several different ones with different opinions and meds. I am concidering trying to get it off my medical records but haven't found a way yet.

And just a bit of insight. I have worked around and with heavy machines for most of my working life. Backhoes trackhoes from end loaders unloading flatbeds. In construction you have many stressors and scenery changes. I had had to travel with work for weeks at a time so its not a new concept for me. I have never been deemed unable to drive or unsafe to drive. I have been "floating" gears and double clutching for years. I have never been adjudicated in any way. Never been in any institutions. I have passed background checks with no issue. Just thought that might shed a little more light on the situation.

Any "shrink is going to prescribe meds the first time you see them. There are several reasons for this, one is most docs get a kickback from big pharma for prescribing their paticular drugs, the other is they now have a full time paying patient. They know you will have to come back to see them for refills, and since these meds are addictive, they also know you will have a hard time getting off them once you start.

If you don't believe number one, check and see if the perscription you get is not the latest, greatest, most expensive pill on the market, and as soon as a new one comes out, you will be switched to that one.

If you are not having any more problems, and don't need the meds, then just keep your mouth shut about ever taking them. It's none of their business if you took them in the past if you are fine now, and they can't get anything from your doctor unless you give them permission to, and you should never put down that paticular dr as anyone you have ever seen.

I understand your view and the points you maid or correct about there kickback program. I always read up on anything I take no matter what it is to see the side affects and dependency factors. Luckily I have had no issues with stopping any meds that were given. But on the same foot I don't want it to seem like I am hiding anything. But I'm not sure what they have in that "file" or if it holds any merit. And I don't want that to hinder me from moving forward.

Believe what I am saying, they don't need to know anything about what you have taken in the past under a doctors order. It is in the past, you have no more problems, end of story. You are getting ready to set yourself up to where no one will ever hire you if you go around volunteering information they are not going to ask for.

I was emailed a dot medical long form and its asks about mental diagnosis and meds. obviously I can say no on the meds part since I am not longer on them but I don't know if what they have put in the "file" is a true diagnosis. And I certainly don't want to mess up just as I am getting started.
