Northtown -- The guys (and gal) in the eight-day Orientation program here that we've talked to, all had recently gotten their CDL from other schools or worked recently for other trucking companies. For your situation the best thing is probably to contact a Roehl recruiter and ask them directly. What I've read on the forums here is that most companies will want you to go through at least a "refresher" if you don't have driving experience within the last six months or so.
Different subject...here are a few more pics of the inside of our training tractor. The instructor sits in the front passenger seat and the two students not currently driving sit in two seats (each has seatbelt) that have been installed where the lower sleeper bunk would normally have been. It's quite comfortable and you can easily watch what the student who's driving is doing and learn from that even when you're not driving. There's plenty of room for your bag/backpack/lunch/etc and your coat/hat/gloves. Each of the two training tractors are basically the same setup.

Week one is in the books. spent the morning with a hazmat video and then trip planning, atlas, truckstop guide, etc...some other classroom stuff we needed to address as well.
I am very please with the material and training I have received so far. I am also extremely happy with the Roehl staff, facilities, and my classmates. I really couldn't have asked to work with a better group of five other guys. It seems that we all get along good and everyone is focused and working hard to make this training a success. No one is ever late or lazy. There is no partying, I think a few have gone to lunch or dinner as a group on occasion but for the most part I think everyone is tired by the end of the day and just has stuff to do to prepare for the next day. Tommorow off, a bit of studying but I think for the most part it's rest for me. I think the weather should be a little warmer next week and i'm hoping that the streets with be down to pavement and not snow/ice covered.Bigdubber Thanks this. -
When you get out on the road and hit a truck stop, get one of those pocket truck stop guides. Much easier to reference and easier to use than that bible thing they give. Though that thing is good too, but the pocket guide I use a ton. I wear them out and need to usually get 2 a year. They run $5-6.

So we had the day off today (Sunday) and I took the opportunity to work out. While doing my stretches afterwards, I noticed that the muscles in my left leg (especially the thigh area) have bulked up significantly in the previous week. Seriously, no joke. It makes sense in retrospect but I did not expect it at all. I can't think of any explanation other than the double-clutching we've all been doing since arriving at RDTC.
-
Not the double clutching, it's holding it at stop lights etc...

Just wait till you spen 3 hrs in stop and go traffic trying to get through ChicagoBigdubber Thanks this.

Week #2 is underway.... some in town driving this morning followed by backing for the rest of the afternoon. It's crunch time, we test for our CDL on Friday. This means our mistakes become points soon. Fine tuning, attention to detail, focus, and be relaxed...not to much to ask. The next class is in too, I saw them driving on the range this afternoon. It looks like a little warm up after tomorrow, that will be nice.
I'm really thankful to be working/learning with such a great group of guys. Its been a team effort so far and there is a lot of respect for everyone. Having to work/go to school is one thing, but going to work in a supportive and friendly atmosphere really makes it a lot nicer.Bigdubber Thanks this. -
Hm, wonder if I will still be able to walk, once my left thigh becomes twice the diameter of my right one
-
Psh After RDTC i stopped useing the clutch except for starting to go and reverse.
Though while in RDTC my left leg hurt like hell for all the use it got. -
goblue, techno,
Are you guys going to be dry van or flatbed? Does anyone in your class already have their CDL? and is just there for a refresher course? I have my CDL A, but haven't driven OTR for three years. I'm just wondering how different the training would be. And the whole CDL bookwork/DPS test.
