So I get a call from my problematic 2nd co-driver (thank God I am not going back on the road with him). I was hoping the call was going to be him saying, oh I am coming through your area so you can get the rest of your things off the truck. Sadly no that was not it, he called me thinking I was "Qualcomm Tech Support" and needed help logging into the system in a loaner truck because him and his new co-driver got put out of service in Tennessee for having not updated there licenses. Long story short he has been on the road since October and still having issues logging into Qualcomm.
Next he proceeds to tell me about the other issues he was having like how the company won't pay him for 700 some odd miles because he pulled an empty trailer from Laredo to N. Little Rock before I guess dispatch realized, "hey he's pulling an empty", or before he realized I might need to call dispatch before pulling off that I am empty. He tells me that nobody was in the office with paperwork and that there were no bills in the nosebox, he said I ask the guard (rent a cop) or (whoever he said it was) if it was ok to leave with an empty. This call took place late yesterday and now it's starting to dawn on me that he didn't have his mess together. So he gets a call from the Driver Manager (DM) and he tells him, "oh there's been a mistake and it's not your fault", and then his new co-driver (I'll get to him in a minute) gets a call and he doesn't tell my old co-driver that it is the department manager and he thinks he is whining to the DM but it's in turn the department manager telling him, "that you are supposed to listen to your day side DM and not to the night guys and that you will not be getting paid for the 700 odd miles you ran empty." My old co-driver argument is well somebody needs to pay me for those miles.
Now with my 2nd co-driver this is not the first time he has screwed up big time, I know we all have our newbie moments and we still make mistakes but there comes a time where we learn and get in the habit of how to work our schedules. I called him sometime last month to catch up with him to see how he was doing and he was saying he wasn't really getting the miles like he should be getting.....(I wonder why?) Then he tells me about some desk jockey telling him to run when his DOT clock was out of time because he was stuck at a shipper, (this was a phone convo and not recorded on the computer) the desk jockey says, "well the Irving yard is about 12 miles just drive there and park for the night".....1)bad mistake you are already out of hours 2) it's 3 am and a bad accident so traffic is tied up and you have no hours 3)when the desk jockey tells you to do something illegal and you have not time on your clock stay put and tell him to send you that on the computer....he got chewed out about that at the glasshouse....ok where was I.....
Oh ok so the conversation continued last night with his other issue and that was him being put out of service at the weigh house in Bull Gap, TN. His new co-driver is fresh off of the road from training and he got nervous and blew past the scale or something to that nature and the DOT officer gives the driver 2 trys to go back over the scale but it wasn't working so they got called in for an inspection. Come to find out there were in violation of the length law and both licenses were out of state and not updated. Out of service. What teed me off about my 2nd co-driver and his license issue is that he has had ample time to get his L's updated.
I get another phone call today because remember everybody I am the "Qualcomm Tech Support Desk" and he still was having some issues this AM and I pray that he is finally moving. I think this may be the last straw with the company for him. I was on the phone talking to another one of my company drivers and I was telling him about the fiasco going on and he says, call the DM and let him know you still got stuff on the truck", call my DM and I ask what's going on with trk#276-- and he says, "it's a lot going on with it right now and it's sitting abandon at a weigh station in Bulls Gap, TN". I tell him well I still got stuff on the truck that I was hoping to get out and this is what really teed me off when the DM told me this, "well he has been through Benton Harbor 7 times", I was like ok....and I am like he didn't give me a call to say I am here in your town you need something off the truck while I am here. My mom told me that he was probably mad because I left him out there to be by himself or that he thought I was coming back on the truck. I said, "yeah it's both reasons". I didn't choose to be on this long of a medical leave but I am happy to be getting back on the open road, but I dislike hott ghetto mess like that in the trucking world. If you can't retain information after being repeatedly told write it down. Now he keeps saying, "I wish you were here"....and I am thinking, "Bulls**t". That's one of the reasons why I had to go on medical leave dealing with your crap and hott ghetto mess.

Sounds like you have been having fun. All things are a learning curve and I think some students just do not have the mentality to learn and do the job. I think some of the companies who feature the cdl mills are scraping the bottom of the barrel and coming up with people who have no other skills and the lightbulb goes off one day and they decide they are going to be big truckers.
Isn't there a termial you can drop his stuff off at, that is if they have some sort of storage areas, or lockers.
Well hope it gets better for you, patience only goes so far some days, husband when he was training had the "come to Jesus" talk with several students, sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Sometimes I think my grandson has more smarts than these adults.mattbh23 Thanks this. -
I kinda hate to bring this up but do you really think ALL your stuff is still on that truck?
How and why would those two bozo's get a second (loaner) truck when they got shut down and put out of service and neither has a valid CDL? -
Only God knows if my stuff is still on that truck, I guess they got all they're business together and now he is getting back on the road, haven't called him yet, but he's been at the yard since last night lol.

I sure hope so, but I may get routed down there once I get on my new co-driver truck.

and people wonder why i say id never do teams. ugh. might end up with someone that somewhat knows what they are doing, or might end up with a story like this one. no thanks, not unless it was family or a good friend already...a good friend that would remain a friend after we found we didnt get along in a small metal box and stopped teaming together as a result.

Hey Matt, it's good to hear that at least you seem to have head on straight. Just be cautious that you don't pulled into the mess when it goes completely ghetto. Because most likely that is going to happen at some point, and you don't want to be tainted by it. Depending on what you have (or sadly, most likely HAD) in that other truck, it might be better to write it off instead of being tied in dispatches mind to the idiocy happening in there. Know what I'm saying? Excrement splatters, don't be close enough to get hit!
Good luck!mattbh23 Thanks this. -
Sounds like the England Q fleet.
Joker85 Thanks this. -
How unfortunate. This is a clear sign of things to come as the demand for drivers will increase while the quality will decrease. Better make sure everyone has five or six people in their dispatch crews being able to speak languages other than English because you know what will dominate the road within the next 5 years...
