Hey, is there any other way to check slack adjusters other than pulling on them when brakes are released? If not, is there any kind of tool to reach the slack adjuster, because they are sometimes hard to get to depending on the type of tractor or trailer you have

Are u certified in brake inspections?

No, just a regular driver. That is part of our pre-trip inspection, which is one of the things they test you on now when getting your licence during the pretrip. I just dont check it if I can't easily get to them.

Pulling on them may not give you an accurate measurement, so if you don't buy a tool, release your brakes (but not all of them at one time unless you have chocks, or want to have a wreck). Mark where the rod is released, then use something between the seat and the brake pedal to apply the brakes, a window squeegee or tire thumper works for me, and crawl back under and look at your marks. Basically this is the same process an inspector will use with you, and while you are underneath with the brakes applied, or while making your initial marks, you can listen for air leaks too.

If I'm going to the effort to crawl under my equipment to check the brake throw, I am just going to carry a ratchet and socket and adjust them. Then I don't have to worry if their out of adjustment because I just took care of it. Also if you are hooked to a trlr, lock trlr brakes to adjust tractor, lock tractor brakes to adjust trlr. I pull my tractor over a pit in our shop and adjust every 6 weeks, That way I am always good. b
