excessive oil leak

The rear structure is the gasket between the flywheel housing and the block. Since the rear engine mounts are attached to the flywheel housing this is a time consuming repair.

 

Hahha .. For real, was great Motor. Now I own a Pete with ISX Cummins .. Uses little oil.

 

Yea thats what my mechanic said also, but then I questioned it because I wasnt sure if there was oil flowing around inside the flywheel housing? I am confused why there is seals in there please explain this to me if you dont mind.

 

The small bolt holes mount the flywheel housing to the block. The gasket seals this mating surface. The large hole in the center is the rear main/crankshaft seal. That seals the crankshaft where it extends outside the engine block to attach the flywheel. The smaller hole at the top right is where the starter is mounted.

 

Thanks for that, So what you are saying is the gasket that goes in between the Block and the housing is what is leaking? So I have never been that deep into a diesel before if I take this flywheel housing off and I am looking at the back of the engine what will I see? (Just for my knowledge) The reason I am asking is because my engine leaks back there also and I am trying to determine what I would need to do to fix it. Again thanks for that!

 

I couldn't find a pic of the rear of the block, but it looks similar to this. The gasket could be the source of your leak. Someone who can actually see it needs to make that diagnosis. I was just trying to explain what the rear structure gasket is.

What's a football gasket on the front of the motor? I was told to fix my oil leak the head or everything "bull gear front cover ect" off the front of the motor needed removed was told $4,200 if I pulled the head that it's the better cheaper faster way???

 

Bring it to the shop I use - on Friday they quoted me $1700 for the same repair, start Monday, would be down until Wednesday. Mine's just oozing, so it's deferred for a few weeks.
