    Here are the facts:

    • _____ at CHR listed load from Charlotte, NC to Seattle, WA (2,700 miles) for hazmat van for $4,500 last Friday. We called and quoted $6,000. Broker didn't flinch, said he would call customer and called back few minutes later indicating $6,000 was fine.
    • On Friday, signed rate confirmation returned to ______ at CH Robinson, agreed at rate of $6000.
    • At 0730 on Monday, _______ called to say that the load was cancelled because the manufacturer was unable to complete a full truck load, and thus could not load the truck.
    • Shortly after 0800 the same load was reposted to Internet Truck Stop, and I immediately called and talked to ______. He told me that the load was available, but the max rate they would pay was $4500.
    • Our truck was dispatched and down the road maybe 1/2 hour at the time of cancellation. However, if we weren't waiting on this load, the truck would probably have gone out earlier.

I realize that things happen and I have a fairly high tolerance level for issues but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. So far, we have hauled several loads for CHR and, although we turn down a bunch of them because their rate is too low, every now and then we get a good load from them - especially haz. What do you suggest? Call a supervisor? TONU? $200? Thoughts?

Well you could charge them a TONU although I doubt they will pay. But instead you should send them a Thank You card! They just saved you from hauling a cheap load of Hazmat!!!

Now save this link to your favorites.......https://maps.google.com/ and use it. I just ran them miles and the shortest I came up with was over 2800 and that isn't counting the extra miles you have in running around big cities. Now according to your calculations, 2700 miles at $6000 that would come up to 2.22 a mile.... That don't seem like a good rate for Haz to me?

It doesnt surprise me that this happened. Not just out of CHR but any broker. They are always going to try and find a truck for cheaper. It sucks but it is freight. And I dont know of much you could do to stop them from doing it. I dont haul for CHR becasue there rates are way TOO CHEAP!

CHR just did that to my dad last week. He'd been sitting out in CO for a couple days for a $1,500 load (15,000 lbs) but the afternoon before he was to pick up it was cancelled for the same reason yours was. Luckily they had a $1,200 load (46,000 lbs) for the same day. I get the feeling that first load never existed :biggrin_25513:

Things don't happen....they are allowed to happen.

Of course you should get TONU. Some will say you aren't entitled because you were only half and hour down the road but that is BS. Some (most) brokers are brokers are lying , cheating, scumbags and they wonder why people loathe them.

Les is spot on. If the load cancelled they certainly did you a favor. That's not even a tempting rate for general freight dry van unless you live in the area and have good outbound connections or have a good grasp of the dry van market in WA state. This smacks of what brokers are well known (and shippers too) take full advantage of... "$2 a mile anywhere is a great rate driver! The more miles the merrier!"... Not knowing markets and running willy nilly all over 48 states leads to low rates and frustration As far as TONU goes a stand up agent would have offered it before you even asked, yes CHR does have good agents like that even if they might be rare. Best to chalk this one up as lesson learned and be glad you didn't get that load at a cheap rate to a dead dry van market...

My Haxmat rate starts at $3.50 p/m + fsc and goes up depending on how nasty the load is. I refuse to haul it for any less so needless to say I do very little Haxmat and that's the way I like it. We have a big enough target on our backsides just doing general freight but now with CSA as soon as you hang those placards on the rig it gets 10 times bigger so the reward better be worth the risk in my book. IMO haxmat is now specialty freight and rates should reflect that or let it sit........:biggrin_25513:

As stated before they did you a favor. But to the post welcome to CHR or alot of brokers for that matter. They found someone cheaper and canceled on you . I would bill them for the TONU but if they do not pay not much you can do. Happens all the time but cancel on them for any reason and see the bs you get.
