As a newb I'd like to thank you guys for your views on what TMC will be like. I attend orientation starting the 25th and your insight on what to expect has prepared me for the upcoming time at tmc. I have just one question for you tmc guys in Illinois where was your trainer from and what was your home time like during your five weeks out?

My trainer was from Dixon Il and I'm just nort of the border in Wisconsin. I was home every weekend except for the last two weeks. We stayed out the 4th weekend and covered a lot of the U.S. You will be on "team" status after the second or third week with the trainer providing you have shown improvement with your driving and securement. You will drive your 11 hours and the trainer will do the same.
Your hometime for the 5 weeks will depend on the trainers schedule and how you are doing. Don't plan on being home every weekend during the 5 weeks. It's really up to the trainer's schedule and freight in the area.
Dont be in hurry to get through the 5 weeks. Take it in and take notes. When you get in your own truck you will be relying on those 5 weeks and what you learned to do your job.
Also, I cannot stress enough,,, if you are having problems with your trainer, speak up! You will be getting weekly phone calls from the training dept to see how you are doing and this is the time to be honest. 95% of the trainers out there are awesome but, dont let a jagdork trainer ruin your career. Speak up if you need to.

    Good luck!

Thanks riverrat. Dixon isn't too far from where I live. We drove through there a lot while I was in my cdl classes. As far as the home time I'm not expecting any during that five weeks just so that if there is any home time it will be a nice surprise. Now how exactly did it work did you drive your car to his house or did he pick you up. This is all new to me so I'm trying to get a good baseline to go off of when the time comes.

I drove to his place and left my car there. Where did you go to CDL school?

I went to Illinois valley community college through unemployment. I was looking into going to crst's cdl school until I talked to a couple o/o I know and they told me to run and run fast from them. It worked out pretty good since unemployment paid the entire cost of my classes and they paid for my hazmat. We had a couple recruiters come through the school and out of all of them tmc sounds like the best opportunity. They sounded the least like a paid salesman. I understand that it's not going to be easy and home time isn't garantteed anywhere but that's part of the reason I want to get into trucking.

Trucking can be a rewarding career if you can get past the tough parts. If you have a family, it is an adjustment for them just as much as it is for you. TMC does a good job of getting you home for the weekend if you are doing a good job of puting yourself in position to make it home. Regardless, being away from home can wear on you when your not used to it and is a big reason why a lot of guys quit within the first couple months. I made up my mind to give trucking a year before I made up my mind as to if I was going to continue with it.
When you head for Des Moines, take snacks and what not with you. Take cans of ravioli, chips, candy bars etc. There is a snack shop in the motel as well as the Chrome cafe but both get expensive if you are relying on them for your meals. If you smoke, take a carton or more with you. The nearest gas station is a long walk.
I took coveralls to use during the securement portion of the training. It saved a lot on having to spend money on doing laundry which cut down on how many changes of clothes I had to pack. A couple guys giggled at me as I put them on the first time, but were envious at the end of the day when they were all dirty and I took off the dirty coveralls and had clean clothes on under.
    Take notes, you'll need them.

    Good luck.

Thanks riverrat I've heard to take pleanty of food with. I've also got little family left around so that won't be much of an issue. I'm used to the long days. My last job we worked 4 am till at least 2 pm so I'm used to not having much time to do anything other than work and get ready for work. I am looking forward to being able to see parts of the country. Im trying to go into this with the mindset that I don't know jack. Thanks for your input. I'm sure I'll pick your brain again but thank you.

oompa, they are right about taking the food with you. If you get roomed with somebody that does not make it, expect to have a new roomie every day. EVERY room is double and as drivers filter into the shop they plug them into empty beds. Take only enough to get by and nothing of value that you are not taking to class every day. They are NOT RESPONSIBLE if something turns up missing. My wife was from that area and she spent 3 days visiting friends (we live in Texas) and I PAID for the private room until she left. There are no refrigerators in the rooms, I think there was a microwave. NOTHING that needs to be kept cool. be sure to keep your trainers phone# they are your first link of help. When not if you run into something your not sure of call. The good ones will coach over the phone, remember the ### load we did in xyz city? your reply... strap it like that etc.... I have been with company 9 months and still call just to check in once a month or so. Also if your waiting to load help other tmc drivers and learn from their comments and experience. It is a little more work but pays off getting an idea how to safely do your own. Most are more than willing to help a newbie with tips. Here is a TIP... carry some hand cleaner and good gloves.... the crud still gets through them somehow.... I carry orange gojo my choice, you may like another. I also carry coveralls those tarps get NASTY.
