Is securement training only available if you get hired somewhere and learn on the job? Im wondering if there is anyone that offers flatbed securement training as a class outside of being employed at a company.

I can't think of anywhere that would teach a securement class besides a) a company or b) MAYBE a VERY in depth CDL school. I went through securement training when I went from van/ reefer to my current company, and honestly while it was helpful in teaching me the very basics, i didnt learn how to tie down 80% of what I pull. Most of my REAL securement training came after I got on the road on my own. Knowing what to look for, what's required, and how to operate itare essential, but OJT and someone to call is about the best thing going IMO.

J.J. keller sells secrument books, and videos. I run flat and secure my loads using common sense and the book if I'm ever in question over how many tiedowns I need or if I have something new that I've never secured. Also WHENEVER I haul steel I ALWAYS ask the shipper if the load needs corner protectors weather it's marked on the bill or not or if it needs to be tarped. Sometimes special requirements will have to be met even though it's not marked. Shippers know they've seen drivers secure loads right and wrong and can help if you need it. Asking other drivers is another viable option as well. Can't count the number of time's I've asked a driver about securing a load or if he had any tips for securing a load that I've yet to pick up. I always consult the book first so I don't waste somebody's time but if I can't find what I'm looking for or am still unsure I'll ask before I get somebody killed. Most will help, others will tell you that you shouldn't be driving if you can't secure it but that's the way it goes. I've yet to meet a driver that's hauled everything and knows how to secure everything on the face of the earth so if you're ever in doubt ask. They can teach you a lot in a manual or video but there's no substitute for getting out there and doing it yourself.

After 20yrs, I still ask once in a while, how to secure a load. Some machinery is just weird that way.
If in doubt, ask. Just be sure the person you ask knows what the hell they are doing!

Books and vids are a start. But OJT is what it takes. As stated above, you have to ask questions. Machinery is the trickiest, most place will tell you what and what can not be touched. JD used to have pics to guide you and the guard would look it over before he gave out the paperwork. Did some small tractors, with practically no place to hook on. The loader came over and showed me when i finally asked for his help.

MOST drivers will help out if asked. . . Nicely. . .

See if you can find a flatbedder who lives around you who would be willing to teach you!
