Thanks AllLab, I like any breed of puppy, but labs are always people-puppies and very easy to train.

I lost both of my older dogs to cancer and heart disease within the past few years, but someday I will adopt another one (both were strays that I found, and no one claimed.)

Most older dogs really like riding in cars, that is, if they once had a family and were used to it.

I adopted my dog 'Sara' when she was about three-years-old. She was listed in the dog officer's list of available pets in the local paper. I called and he informed me that she was no longer available as she was to be put down in the morning as her ten days were gone by.

I'm not kidding either, but mercifully that 'dog officer' was put out of a job a few months later. I showed up at that town's shelter at 8 the next morning, with the bail-out fee in cash and away she went with me. Kinda a 'Snazzyish' story, but true. I can only guess whoever had her before had a pu truck, because she immediatly went to the back of my car. Sorry puppy, back seat for you. I had her for thirteen years. She loved car rides (and even knew Mickey D signs as a place I would stop to get her a snack.) She loved the cats and watched Red Sox games with me. I still miss her, great dog.

Adopt an older dog, they will not let you down.

Aww Sara was lucky you saved her, good on you. Our next dog will def be a rescue, I feel bad to have gotten a pup when there are so many that need homes. Next time.....

I cant believe that some places only give them 10 days!!! Thats horrible! I htought that they normally at least had a couple of months to get adopted!

Check out Midwest Boxer Rescue they have lots of younger, mid-aged, and older boxers just waiting for a good home. Sometimes they have other breeds too if you are still unsure of what kind you are looking for.

    Good Luck!:biggrin_255:

I don't know where you got the idea that an older shelter dog may "have problems".
As a Rescue Transport Volunteer, I have transported hundreds of dogs from shelter to rescue, from rescue to rescue and from rescue to forever-home. The "older" dogs were always more well behaved than the pups, and they were always house-broken. Seldom did they get car-sick and most of them had ridden in a vehicle before and loved it.

My husband took his puppy on the road last year when he'd go OTR for our own business. Roadie (short for Roadkill) did great in the truck, and it had no sleeper, but when they got to a rest stop or a motel the pup ran and ran and ran. He's part Chihuaua that we know for sure, but MUST have Jack Russell in him because of the energy (LOL), he's got the merling markings exactly like an Aussie, even has a blue eye and the eye problems that are associated with Aussie's, but is 16 pound full grown.

I guess you could go right OR wrong with either adult or a pup, but if you want to limit your stops I'd definitely check into an older dog. A good ol' mutt is usually the best kind of dog you can find, and the older guys already have all their 'kinks' usually worked out. ;)

I love dogs, love cats, have both at my home, but a dog in a truck for weeks on end, why ? I think it is cruel to the animal, I see them all the time jumping around the cab, barking at you when you walk by, they are trapped in that cab 24/7. I won't even start on the pet odor and shedding that happens, I have driven trucks that had pets in them, sorry no other way to put it, they stink.
I love my pets, but inside the cab of my truck for weeks, NOT!
