I notice most jobs posted online working in the oilpatch require drug/alcohol testing. Can someone explain what that testing actually is?
I don't do any drugs at all, but I'll have a drink on my time off, never when working or operating a big rig. What does the alcohol test show and if I have a couple of beers the night before a test will I fail that test and be excluded from that job even though I am not drinking on the job or drunk?
I'm just trying to figure out if I am ever allowed to have a drink after I get employed by one of these companies.

    Please share your experiences.

you can drink on your time off....

    WHAT ALCOHOL USE IS PROHIBITED?
Alcohol is a legal substance; therefore, the rules define specific prohibited alcohol-related conduct. Performance of safety-sensitive functions is prohibited:

    • While using alcohol.
    • While having a breath alcohol concentration of 0.04 percent or greater as indicated by an alcohol breath test.
    • Within four hours after using alcohol.
In addition, refusing to submit to an alcohol test or using alcohol within eight hours after an accident or until tested (for drivers required to be tested) are prohibited.

i personally wouldnt drink til my days off....but thats up to you..and i sure wouldnt drink within 4 hrs of driving...altho they say you can as long as you dont blow over the limit

Drinkin and workin dont mix well. If you dont get totally hammered the night before going to work then you will probably be OK, but I would tread lightly, and think about how important the job is the job is to you before twistin off...

Thanks for the replies. I should of clarified what I was meaning a bit better. I would have a couple of pints on my own time in between the 3 week long tour of duties. If I had a couple of drinks the night prior and wasn't driving till the following night 24h or more later would that be ok or would that cause me grief? I don't do any illegal drugs, so no issue there.

you will be more than fine if it is 24 hrs beforehand...as long as you dont start 24 hrs and still drinking 23 hrs later..LOL

I've had a few of these now.

One company just check for meth, cocaine, pot etc etc..with urine test
one I did an actual breathalyzer and urine test.

another was urine and fitness testing, so full physical + push-ups, crunches and so on...

The thing you have to carefull about is they have mandatory urine test after any incident, and they determine the severity that requires a piss test.

if you dont do drugs then your fine, just don't drink anything including over the self medications for 24hr prior to your test.
