Looking at giving TransCore or ITS a try, although TransCore is $250.00 per month the rep told me.

    My question is,

    • do these boards allow you to pick up a Fair paying load? A meeting of the minds where both parties are happy with the out come?
    • Do trucking companies post here and then we have to compete with the Brokers for those loads?
    • Brokers will post here as well?
    • This is an over flow area where loads go that can not be handled by the Larger Trucking Companies?
I have been tolled that O/O will use these boards and will take a load for fuel to go from Calgary back to Vancouver
I would not do that as my own opinion is, if you are moving the freight you are responsible for it getting from point A to Point B thus you are paid to take responsibility for this load and deliver it to the customer. Why would you do this for Fuel only?

    My Own evaluation of the load boards;
    • Trucking company may post the load
    • Or trucking company will send the load info to 20 brokers / first one to sell it gets paid. If this is true then the loads would not sit for long on the board.
    • Brokers / Trucking companies with No Power, pick up the loads and then dispatch them to the O/O they have leased onto them. This is a Dispatch service for 30% of what the load is paying.
    • Trucking company takes their % then gives it out to the Brokers or Posts to the Board
    • If the Broker / Trucking company with NO Power, has been around for a while and has created a relationship with that company they may just give them the loads they have with out posting on the Board
If anyone has some more insight into this I would appreciate the feed back.

    Thanks

I hope someone who knows replies.
I'm pretty curious about this, too. So far it seems to me it would be low rate freight available.

Hi folks, I've used both for over 20 years and each have their good and bad qualities. Here are a couple of things to consider. If you are doing Canada only, Transcore (loadlink) is your best option even though it's waay too expensive. As Transcore owns DAT systems, you can buy the DAT live program in the US for $35/month but they won't let you do that in Canada as they wanna gouge you with link. I found a steady shipper off of ITS a few years ago that pays over $4.00/mile but that is really rare. There is a lot of bottom-feeder loads on all the boards but eventually that gets weeded out (unless some doofus feels the need to run really cheap).

As to Alberta, rates out of there are crap, and when you consider there is something like 30 loads coming into AB for each one leaving there is the problem. I run a lot of machinery into AB and my customer told me one day that when he has something to move outta province, not only can he dictate who hauls it and for how much, he can order a specific hair colour for the driver as well! :)

Best advice I could give is to pick a lane and do nothing but service the crap outta that lane. You may find ups and downs but you will eventually hook up with a shipper/broker. etc. that has something steady you can sink your teeth into. Best of luck! And remember, negotiation is key. Just because someone tells you a crap rate don't mean it has to move for that price. doesn't always work, but most times you can negotiate a price you are comfortable with.

Shocked about the AB load quality you've described. I've been hearing things about Ontario in that way. Good information!

I should clarify my 1st post. Rates into Alberta are great, but there is so much product coming in to service the patch that it's a buyers market coming out. 25 years ago I could get $4000 out of Whitecourt into southern Ontario for lumber, the last one I was offered was at $2200, so I don't even bother usually. You can do better heading south out of AB (but not a lot), and the odd time you can make out like a bandit when someone needs something moved ASAP. And yes, Ontario is hurting bad rate wise, especially on cross-border moves. 10 years ago I got $2750 out of Toronto to Atlanta area for a flatbed, there are peeps doing it now for $1400. No idea HOW they do it, so that's another one I don't bother with anymore. :)

These rate cuts are truly unbelievable considering the inflation of costs on operating. DEF, the corresponding systems, an hour of shop time at the dealer, fuel, licensing, insurance, tickets and increased regulations. I get so depressed about the future.

I spoke wth CH Robinson a while agol Cal - Van = $950 and $1750 Van = Cal so that is $2700 round trip. Not a great rate but doable to keep moving I guess but Why go for only 950 but what other choices are there
