yeah but is that a good price? I do not know what the cost would be if one was bought from a shop/dealer.

I had to replace the bull, cam and idler gear in mine in Feb 2009, its a 12.7, but I'd think the price would be similar:

    bull gear- $739, + $134 core charge
    cam gear- $343
    idler gear- $298

These came from our KW dealer, I checked with a nearby Freightliner dealer and they were the same or slightly higher price. Probably higher by now, everything else is.....

I found this in my mail draft. I guess I saved it for reference. not sure where it came from.

The Bull Gear is the large gear in the front of the engine that is driven from the crankshaft gear. The Bull Gear turns the camshaft; water pump, air compressor, power steering pump, fuel pump and accessory drive which in turn drives the alternator and air conditioning compressor. As you can see, if the 2 taper roller bearings, which are about 4 inches in diameter, in the Bull Gear fail, your engine is wiped out. The valves will hit the pistons, all of the gears in the front of the engine are stripped, and all of the items listed above will come to a halt. Now the rule for replacing the Bull Gear is if the engine has over 850,000 miles and is being rebuilt, the Bull Gear must be replaced. We have rebuilt many 60 Series Detroits in the chassis with 1 million plus miles and found the Bull Gear did not fail yet. We always replace them at that time. The cost for the Bull Gear is about $700.00 and it takes about 16 additional hours to replace it. If your Detroit is nearing 850,000 miles, this is something you are going to want to do. Just like a crankshaft damper at 500,000 miles, replacing the bull gear when you’re getting a rebuild is cheap insurance. A bad crankshaft damper can also shorten the life of the bull gear. Those of you who have over 500,000 on your Series 60 and haven't replaced the crankshaft damper, you better think twice, that new damper will eliminate the torsional vibrations from eating away at the bearings in the Bull Gear. Like they say in a divorce, "It's cheaper to keep her." Well, it is the opposite with an engine; it's cheaper to replace the parts as they wear as opposed to waiting for a major failure. So I guess I answered my own question. I also figured it may not matter if the bull gear is for the 11.1 or the 12.7. I know there is a definate difference, but I think one could trade to the shop for the other if needed.

I still have some Detroit Series 60 Bull Gears for $399. They are part number R8929168. They are New Reman Bull Gears from RELIABILT that are factory packaged! This part retails at your local dealer for over $1,100 plus tax (with a core).
Just search for Detroit Bull Gear on ebay!

well those of you that know me, i just sucked a pistion 2 weeks ago. trucks at a shop getting a inframe. this is a major learning curve for me. i am big on maint. two othere that have my phone called me begging to change the bull gear. my truck has a 1.4 million on it. after we have taken everything apart. i was able to get a yr date off the main bearings. the last inframe was back in 2005. I discussed with the mechanic about the bull gear . An i agree 100 % with heavyhauler. you are already there an have 95 %of the motor torn down. at this pint is is foolish not to change it. Is the money outlay painfull. sure it is. It is better to bit the bullet now. than to spend all that money on a inframe an have one part fail that will toast your motor an possibly put you out of buisness. I call it takeing the bullet out of the gun! this may be my first inframe. but iv turned enough wrenches to know. to do some research. an on a 12.7 detroit, this is a weak spot after 850,000 mile. just my two cents worth,

    Heavyd and A-dog Thank this.

Well stated. Agree 100% on bull gear and damper. I always do the damper at or before 500K miles. Relatively cheap for the job that it does.
