hey mandiesel, ive been OTR for just under a year and i love it. i left law enforcement to do this. No particular reason. My father has been in this industry for 30+ years. The freedom is awesome and the pay isnt bad. You get to see alot of sights and meet some very interesting people. In this profession you can choose when/if you decide to talk to people, so that gives you the option to be sociable, LOL.
    good luck

I became a trucker because it was always a childhood dream. Have 3 degrees, and people always tell me I am wasting brainpower. Well, I look forward to going to work, and I like what I do. More than I could say when I was utilizing my degrees.

Well I plan on getting a divorce before long, but I do have a 6 year old daughter.
I do have a job,in fact it's a good job, just tired of the politics and always been pretty much a loner never cared too much about working side by side other people.
Just sort of a game plan I guess to get into trucking eventually and go see the country.

How many of you think "Sweatshop On Wheels" is a true statement?

Do you guys feel like you're running a sweatshop on wheels?

I'm just trying to find out as much as I can about trucking.
I've come to the conclusion already that it takes a true love of driving and the lifestyle to make it in this industry (OTR anyway).
A person could make $25 p/h just as a helper in construction nowadays (SE Texas)with overtime after 40 hrs.
So a person doesn't just do it for the money I rankin.

Anyway give me y'alls opinion on the above statement.

If it is a sweatshop on wheels then I make it that way.

Yes you have to truly like what you do to enjoy it but that goes for any job.

I'm getting ready to go to school in Feb. Driving a truck is something I've wanted to do for a long time. I've loved trucks since I was a kid. I'm also doing it for the money. I've been driving a concrete truck for 4 years now and I 'm making 10.00 an hour, haven't had a raise in 2 years, time to go for it!
