Oh boy what a trucking company?

can not belive no one has got this one filled out

 

These big trucking companies rates are so low that a guy today, just starting up a trucking company couldn't compete and be profitable. These companies that treat you like crap...i.e. JB Hunt, Schneider National, CRST, Werner, Swift, ect,ect....hire wannabe truckdrivers and train them, never mind the fact that 90% don't stay in the industry a year, so they can have cheap labor to offset their cheap rates.

A company that would treat drivers right, pay good wages, give quality hometime and provide decent benefits don't stand a chance against these guys. Union companies like Yellow and Roadway do and they have a waiting list of drivers who want to drive for them. The union companies used to be specialized, i.e. LTL freight but the non union companies are breaking into that segment of trucking and the union companies will probably be gone soon. Specialized hauling is where the good pay and benefits are today in a non union environment. Tankers, heavy hauling, pnuematic tanks, and the like treat drivers with the respect they deserve and usually have a very low turnover ratio. The company I am with, TSMT has a turnover ratio of 30% not bad in this day and age of 120% turnover ratio's that these big companies have.

 

Fireba11 is right. In todays market to compete with the big companies would require tremendous financial backing. The first few years you would loose millions of dollars. The CDL mill companies make it too easy to fill seats. Frankly they treat you like garbage because they want you to quit. Why pay an experienced driver .35 cents or more when you can get a new driver for .22 cents? Their rates reflect their driver pay rates. So an upstart company would have to be able to compete with .22 freight while actually paying its drivers what they are worth. Financial ruin would be the result for anyone attempting to do this on a large scale.

Theere are good companies out there, Panther is a good example. Problem is they are small. Or at least to small to run with the larger carriers. In this industry the old saying "you get what you pay for" doesnt exactly hold true in the eyes of a shipper. In their eyes the freight gets there either way, it's a simple matter of economics.

In theory I support your idea. But in reality it would be a tough thing to pull off.

Around here, YRC always has the hiring sign out. No waiting. Something wrong with this picture?

 

Maybe because they pay less than most non union companies or because they haven't turned a profit since Clinton was president and they are exactly one really bad day from going under.
Or it could be something else entirely.

 

Have a friend who left Milan years ago to go to YRC. HATED IT there Hated most everything about YRC, lasted about 3 months. Went to Holland, been there about 10 years.

 

I thought holland and yrc are sister companies.
