Have a 2013 Peterbilt with an ISX Cummins 550hp 1850ft/tq. The motor only has 11,000 miles on it and has burned over 4 gallons of oil. Is this expected during engine break-in? We had an inframe done on a 6nz and it only burned maybe a gallon during break-in period. My other question is what is the ideal rpm to shift the truck at (3.90 gears 18-speed)? Avg loads are 110,000lbs and only averaging 4.0mpg (600 miles round trip).

that sounds like a leak, not a break in situation.

There is no leaks on the truck. It has a total of 11,000 miles 3,500 which were put on this week. The truck probably gets washed 3 times a week and the engine is show-room looking so no visible leak. I'm worried about the rings not seating correctly. Had this happen with a Interstate McBee kit in a 3406e

the new engine has an issue with the exhaust valve guide seals coming off the guide. it should be throwing a code for to frequent of regen 3375 and 3376. remove the v/c and look a the valves closest to the exhaust manifold to see if the seal has come off. the repair takes about 5hr and is of course coverd under warranty.

There has been no check engine lights or codes. I'm gonna call the peterbilt dealer monday, I'm not going to touch the truck after I have it serviced. If it continues to burn oil it will be going back to peterbilt. Do you know of any other links that I can read about this issue? Thank you

Valve seals aren't the root cause of 3375 and 3376.

The 2013 cascadia I drive had 985 miles on it when I got it and was 1 gallon down. Now how bad does yours really sound? It never used that much oil after i started to drive it. It only has 48,000 some odd miles on her now and has only used about 1 gallon since. I only haul 80,000 and shes a dd13 3:42 RR You pull a much heavier load and depending how its pushed I can see it eating 1 or 2 gallons during break in . As long as a ring isn't cracked . I would monitor it though.
